THE object of this work is, to provide select passages of Scripture for all the Sundays in the year, particularly suited for the young to commit to memory; so rightly divided as to give them a portion in due season, 2 Tim. ii. 15; Luke xii. 42; 1 Cor. iii. 1, 2;

Heb. v. 11-13.

I fear some teachers have paid very little attention to suitable selections, and that sometimes the scholars have been left to make their own choice: while in other cases, whole books have been learned through without discrimination, as a mere exercise of memory.

Teachers should explain the lessons before they are learned: I strongly recommend them to adopt this plan, and always to make the words and the scope of the passage clear and plain to their scholars before it is learned by heart: this will help them greatly, and keep their understandings employed as well as their memories.

I hope the brief notes I have given will afford some assistance to the scholars; and that teachers will add such further explanations as they may find needful. I recommend that the marginal references be diligently consulted by the teachers, and for this purpose advise them to procure the Pocket Paragraph Bible of the Religious Tract Society, price 4s. boards, or 5s. bound.

After the lesson is committed to memory, the learners should be reexamined as to its meaning, including the Notes; and the subject be closely applied to their hearts, consciences, and conduct.

The use of this little book will tend to prevent the wear and careless treatment of the Bible.

SCRIPTURE SELECTIONS.

SUBJECT I.

The young admonished and instructed. REJOICE, O young man, in thy youth; And let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth,

And walk in the ways of thine heart, And in the sight of thine eyes:

But know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart,

And put away evil from thy flesh : For childhood and youth are vanity. Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth,

* Or, anger, Margin.

While the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh,

When thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them.*-Eccles. xi. 9, 10; xii. 1.

*After this follows a fine poetical description of old age.

II. Christ humbled, and then exalted. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God,* thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation,+ and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

"Having the brightness of the Father's glory," Heb. i. 3. + Literally, "he emptied himself."
