4 Let peace within her walls be found-
Let all her sons unite,

To spread with grateful zeal around,
Her clear and shining light.

- 5 Great God, we hail the sacred day,
Which thou hast called thine own;
With joy the summons we obey,
To worship at thy throne.

THIRD PART. C. M.

1 OH 'twas a joyful sound to hear
Our tribes devoutly say,

'Up, Israel, to the temple haste,
And keep your festal day!'

2 At Salem's courts we must appear,
With our assembled powers,

In strong and beauteous order ranged,
Like her united towers.

mp 3 Oh pray we then for Salem's peace-
For they shall prosperous be,
Thou holy city of our God,

Who bear true love to thee.

mp 4 May peace within thy sacred wal

A constant guest be found;

With plenty and prosperity
Thy palaces be crowned.

FOURTH PART. C. P. M.

Kew.

1 THE festal morn, my God, is come,
That calls me to thy sacred dome,
Thy presence to adore:

My feet the summons shall attend,
With willing steps thy courts ascend,
And tread the hallowed floor.

2 With holy joy I hail the day,

That warns my thirsting soul away;
What transports fill my breast!
For, lo! my great Redeemer's power
Unfolds the everlasting door,
And leads me to his rest!

3 Hither, from earth's remotest end,
Lo! the redeemed of God ascend,
Their tribute hither bring;

Here, crowned with everlasting joy,
In hymns of praise their tongues employ,
And hail th' immortal King.

FIFTH PART. S. P. M.

1 HOW pleased and blest was I,
To hear the people cry,

'Come, let us seek our God to-day!'
Yes, with a cheerful zeal,

We haste to Zion's hill,

And there our vows and honors pay.
2 Zion-thrice happy place-
Adorned with wondrous grace,

Bethel.

And walls of strength embrace thee round:
In thee our tribes appear

To pray, and praise, and hear
The sacred gospel's joyful sound.
3 Here David's greater Son

Has fixed his royal throne;

He sits for grace and judgment here:
He bids the saints be glad,

He makes the sinners sad,
And humble souls rejoice with fear.

4 May peace attend thy gate,
And joy within thee wait,

To bless the soul of every guest:
The man who seeks thy peace,
And wishes thine increase,

A thousand blessings on him rest!
5 My tongue repeats her vows,

'Peace to this sacred house!"

For here my friends and kindred dwell:
And since my glorious God

Makes thee his blest abode,

My soul shall ever love thee well.

Humble Waiting on God for Spiritual Strength. P 1 LORD, before thy throne we bend; Now to thee our eyes ascend:

mf

[ocr errors]

Servants to our Master true,
Lo! we yield thee homage due:-
Children, to thy throne we fly,
Abba, Father, hear our cry!

p 2 Low before thee, Lord, we bow,
We are weak-but mighty thou:
Sore distressed, yet suppliant still,
Here we wait thy holy will:
Bound to earth, and rooted here,
Till our Saviour God appear.

mf

3 Leave us not beneath the power
Of temptation's darkest hour:
Swift to read their captives' doom,
See our foes exulting come!--
Jesus, Saviour, yet be nigh,
Lord of life and victory!

FIRST PART. C. M.

Safety of trusting in God.

Colchester.

mf 1 UNSHAKEN as the sacred hill,
And firm as mountains stand;
Firm as a rock-the soul shall rest,
That trusts th' almighty hand.

2 Not walls nor hills could guard so well
Fair Salem's happy ground,

As those eternal arms of love,

That every saint surround."

dol 3 Deal gently, Lord, with souls sincere, And lead them safely on;

Oh may we reach the blest abode,
Where Christ our Lord is gone.

SECOND PART. S. M. Watchman.

f 1 FIRM and unmoved are they,
Who rest their souls on God;

Firm as the mount where David dwelt,
Or where the ark abode.

2 As mountains stood to guard
The city's sacred ground,
So God, and his almighty love,
Embrace his saints around.

dol 3 Deal gently, Lord, with those,
Whose faith and holy fear,
Whose hope, and love, and every grace,
Proctain their hearts sincere.

[blocks in formation]

1 WHEN God revealed his gracious name,
And changed my mournful state,

My rapture seemed a pleasing dream,
The grace appeared so great.

2 The world beheld the glorious change,
And did thy hand confess;

My tongue broke out in unknown strains,
And sung surprising grace.

3 Great is the work !--my neighbors cried,
And owned thy power divine;
my heart replied,
And be the glory thine.

Great is the work

- 4 The Lord can clear the darkest skies,
Can give us day for night;

Make drops of sacred sorrow rise
To rivers of delight.

mp 5 Let those that sow in sadness wait
Till the fair harvest come;

127

They shall confess their sheaves are great,
And shout the blessings home.

FIRST PART. L. M.

Uxbridge.

The divine Blessing necessary to Success.

1 IF God succeed not, all the cost

And pains to build the house are lost;
If God the city will not keep,

The watchful guards as well may sleep.

2 What though we rise before the sun,
And work, and toil, when day is done,
Careful and sparing eat our bread,
To shun that poverty we dread;

3 'Tis all in vain, till God hath blest;
He can make rich, yet give us rest;
On God, our sovereign, still depends
Our joy in children and in friends.

4 Happy the man, to whom he sends
Obedient children, faithful friends!
How sweet our daily comforts prove,
Bestowed by his paternal love!

127

SECOND PART.

C. M. Nottingham.

1 IF God to build the house deny,
The builders work in vain;

And towns, without his wakeful eye,
An useless watch maintain.

2 Before the morning beams arise,
Your painful work renew,
And till the stars ascend the skies,
Your tiresome toil pursue.

3 Short be your sleep, and coarse your fare,
In vain, till God has blest;

But if his smiles attend your care,
You shall have food and rest.

4 Nor children, relatives, nor friends,
Shall real blessings prove,

127

Nor all the earthly joys he sends,
If sent without his love.

THIRD PART. 8s & 7s. Sicilian Hymn.

1 VAINLY through night's weary hours,
Keep we watch, lest foes alarm;
Vain our bulwarks, and our towers,
But for God's protecting arm.

2 Vain were all our toil and labor,
Did not God that labor bless;
Vain, without his grace and favor,
Every talent we possess.

3 Vainer still the hope of heaven,
That on human strength relies;
But to him shall help be given,
Who in humble faith applies.

4 Seek we, then, the Lord's Anointed,
He shall grant us peace and rest;
Ne'er was suppliant disappointed,

Who through Christ his prayer addressed.
