3 He does my wandering soul reclaim,
And, to his endless praise,
Instruct with humble zeal to walk
In his most righteous ways.

4 I pass the gloomy vale of death,
From fear and danger free;
For there his aiding rod and staff
Defend and comfort me.

· 5 Since God doth thus his wondrous love
Through all my life extend,
That life to him 1 will devote,
And in his temple spend.

THIRD PART. C. M.

dol 1 MY shepherd will supply my need,
Jehovah is his name;

In pastures fresh he makes me feed,
Beside the living stream.

2 He brings my wandering spirit back
When I forsake his ways,

And leads me, for his mercy's sake,
In paths of truth and grace.

P 3 When I walk through the shades of death,
Thy presence is my stay;

One word of thy supporting breath
Drives all my fears away.

4 The sure provisions of my God
Attend me all my days;

Oh may thy house be mine abode,
And all my work be praise.

FOURTH PART. S. M.

dol 1 THE Lord my shepherd is;
I shall be well supplied;
Since he is mine, and I am his,
What can I want beside?

2 He leads me to the place,

Where heavenly pasture grows;
Where living waters gently pass,
And full salvation flows.

He doth my soul reclaim

[ocr errors]

And guides me in his own right way,
For his most holy name.

4 While he affords his aid,

I cannot yield to fear;

Though I should walk through death's dark

My shepherd's with me there.

5 Amid surrounding foes

Thou dost my table spread;
My cup with blessings overflows,
And joy exalts my head.

6 The bounties of thy love

Shall crown my future days;
Nor from thy house will I remove,
Nor cease to speak thy praise.

FIFTH PART. S. M.

dol 1 WHILE my Redeemer's near,
My shepherd, and my guide,
I bid farewell to every fear;
My wants are all supplied.

2 To ever fragrant meads,

[shade,

Haverhill.

Where rich abundance grows,
His gracious hand indulgent leads,
And guards my sweet repose.

Aff 3 Dear Shepherd, if I stray,

My wandering feet restore;
And guard me with thy watchful eye,
And let me rove no more.

SIXTH PART. 7s.

dol 1 TO thy pastures, fair and large,
Heavenly Shepherd, lead thy charge;
And my couch, with tenderest care,
Midst the springing grass prepare.
2 When I faint-with summer's heat,
Thou shalt guide my weary feet
To the streams, that, still and slow,
Through the verdant meadows flow.

mf 3 Safe the dreary vale I tread,
By the shades of death o'erspread;
With thy rod and staff supplied,
This my guard—and that my guide.
4 Constant, to my latest end,
Thou my footsteps shalt attend;
And shalt bid thy hallowed dome
Yield me an eternal home.

FIRST PART. L. M.

The Citizen of Zion.

1 THE earth, O Lord, is ever thine,

Timsbury.

-

Its peopled realms, and wealthy stores; Built on the floods by power divine, The waves are ramparts to the shores. mp2 But who shall reach thy holy place, Or who, O Lord, ascend thy hill ? The pure in heart shall see thy face, The perfect man, that doth thy will. 3 He, who to bribes hath closed his hand, To idols never bent the knee, Nor sworn in falsehood;-he shall stand Redeemed, and owned, and kept by thee.

SECOND PART. L. M.

'' 1 WHO shall ascend the holy hill,

f

Alfreton.

Great God! which all thy glories fill?
Who, in thy temple's hallowed dome,
Secure his everlasting home?

2 Whose hands are clean-whose heart sincere, Whose purpose pure-whose actions clear, Whose soul no vanity allures,

And truth his plighted vow secures ;

3 This man the blessing shall receive, The blessing, which the Lord will give : Salvation from his God shall flow, And righteousness his hand bestow. 4 These are the men-the chosen seed, Like Jacob, wrestling as they plead: They seek, O Lord-they seek thy face, maf And wait-and find the promised grace.

THIRD PART. L. M.

Triumphal Ascension of Christ.

Appleton.

1 OUR Lord is risen from the dead,
Our Jesus is gone up on high:
The powers of hell are captive led,
Dragged to the portals of the sky.

2 There his triumphal chariot waits,
And angels chant the solemn lay:
Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates!
Ye everlasting doors, give way!

3 Loose all your bars of massy light,

And wide unfold th' ethereal scene;
He claims these mansions as his right,
Receive the King of glory in.

4 "Who is the King of glory-who?"
The Lord, that all his foes o'ercame,
That sin, and death, and hell o'erthrew;
And Jesus is the conqueror's name.

5 Lo! his triumphal chariot waits,
And angels chant the solemn lay:
Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates!
Ye everlasting doors, give way!

6 "Who is the King of glory-who?"
The Lord, of boundless power possessed,
The King of saints and angels too,
God over all, forever blest.

FOURTH PART. C. M.

The Citizen of Zion.

1 LORD, who, among the sons of men,
May visit thine abode ?-

Judea

He, who has hands from mischief clean,
Whose heart is right with God.

2 This is the man may rise and take
The blessings of his grace;

This is the lot of those who seek
The God of Jacob's face.

3 Now let our souls' immortal powers,
To meet the Lord, prepare;
Lift up their everlasting doors,
The King of glory's near.

4 The King of glory!-who can tell
The wonders of his might?

He rules the nations-but to dwell
With saints is his delight.

FIFTH PART. C. M.

Tallis' Chant.

Triumphal Ascension of Christ.

1 LIFT up your heads, eternal gates,
Unfold, to entertain

The King of glory;-see, he comes
With his celestial train.

2 Who is this King of glory?-who?
The Lord, for strength renowned;
In battle mighty,—o'er his foes
Eternal victor crowned.

3 Lift up your heads, eternal gates,
Unfold, to entertain

The King of glory;-see, he comes
With all his shining train.

4 Who is this King of glory?-who?
The Lord of hosts renowned:

Of glory he alone is King,

Who is with glory crowned.

SIXTH PART.

7s. Bath Abbey.

1 "WIDE, ye heavenly gates, unfold,
Closed no more by death and sin;
Lo! the conquering Lord behold!
Let the King of glory in."
Hark, th' angelic host inquire,
"Who is he, th' almighty King ?"
Hark again, the answering choir
Thus in strains of triumph sing:-
2 "He, whose powerful arm alone,
On his foes destruction hurled;
He, who hath the victory won,
He, who saved a ruined world:-
