MANY (a) of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake; some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Daniel xii. 2.

It is better for thee to enter into life. maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched; where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. Mark ix. 43, 44.

And it came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's

bosom (b); the rich man also died and was buried: And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame. And Abraham said, Son, remember that thou, in thy lifetime, receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things, but now he is comforted and thou art tormented. Luke xvi. 22—25.

Jesus Christ hath abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel: That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. There remaineth, therefore, a rest for the people of God. 2 Timothy i. 10. John iii. 15. Hebrews iv. 9.

In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you; I go to prepare a place for you: And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto Myself, that where I am, there ye may be also. John xiv. 2, 3.

We know, that if our earthly house (c) of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house (d) not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. There the wicked cease from troubling, and there the weary be at rest. 2 Corinthians v. 1. Job iii. 17.

(e) The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans vi. 23.

Thou wilt show me the path of life: in, Thy presence is fulness of joy, at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm xvi. 11.

They that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament, and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. Daniel xii. 3.

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. Matthew vi. 19, 20.

Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours, and their works do follow them. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. Revelation xiv. 13; ii. 10.

(e) Death is the due recompense of sin; we may be said to earn death by sin, as a servant doth his wages. But weak and fallen man, could not earn eternal life-could not do any thing, of himself, to lay claim to it. Jesus Christ, by dying for our sins, has brought us into the way of salvation; and enables us, by His Holy Spirit, to "work it out." And, though eternal life is often spoken of as a reward to the good, that reward itself is purchased by the blood of the Redeemer, and can be obtained only through a living and fruitful faith in Him; and therefore it is, after all, "the gift of God through Jesus Christ our Lord."
