It has been thought unnecessary to annex to the work any additional columns of spelling; for if the children be accustomed to spell from the lessons which they will afterwards read in the Bible and Testament, and learn perfectly the spelling cards of the National Society, they will have attained as much, in this way, as mere Sunday scholars are likely to require. The notes, notwithstanding the wish and endeavour to make them plain, may be sometimes beyond the children's capacity; but they will at least furnish a few useful hints to some of the teachers, who may enlarge upon them in a more familiar manner. Let it not, after all, be overlooked or forgotten that the principal design of this little work is to lead to the knowledge and practice of religion, without which the learning to read will do more harm than good. Heaven grant that the rising generation, with the peculiar advantages of instruction they now enjoy, may be "trained up in the way that they should go;" for, otherwise, the extent of education, instead of being a blessing, will become a powerful engine of mischief and destruction. 土 On God, the Maker and Ruler of the World.
