SERMON I.

AN ANALYSIS OF THE EPISTLE TO THE HEBREWS,

SHOWING THE DIVINITY OF JESUS AND HIS PROPITIATORY

CHARACTER.

HEBREWS i. 3.

"WHO BEING THE BRIGHTNESS OF HIS GLORY, AND THE EXPRESS IMAGE OF HIS PERSON, AND UPHOLDING ALL THINGS BY THE WORD OF HIS POWER, WHEN HE HAD BY HIMSELF PURGED OUR SINS, SAT DOWN ON THE RIGHT HAND OF THE MAJESTY ON HIGH:

ST. PAUL opens this celebrated Epistle to his countrymen in the most sublime and magnificent terms. He wrote to men who knew the nature of the true God, and worshipped him in the way of his own appointment, and whose holy Prophets, the authors of their inspired Scriptures, spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. It was not necessary to explain to them as he did to the Heathen, the first principles of religion,-the providence of God, the responsibility of man, and the extreme folly of all idolatrous service. He went, therefore, at once to the point
