Imprynted at London in Paules Churche Yearde, at the

Sygne of the Maydens Heed, by Thomas Petyt, n.d.

This very curious grammatical tractate is not mentioned in Ames, in the account of books printed by Petyt. It has two wood engravings of Master and Scholars; one on the front, the other on the back of the title. The former is a representation of the master in school, hearing the lessons of the scholars, and dictating ex cathedrâ, with uplifted rod, ready to fall on the hapless head of him who presumes on the master's patience with a task half learnt: the other is the master in his study, with the missal on a lutrin, or triangular desk, and screened from the laughing school-boys by a huge oak chair. The English is beautifully printed, with copious marginal Latin notes.

Hamessiach, Stella Messiæ, £8. 8s. Essling, per Conrad Feyner, 1477. "That this volume is both curious and rare (saith Dibdin) is unquestionable. On the reverse of the first leaf is a spirited wood-cut of three Christians conversing with three Jews. The mild expression of the former, and the snarling cast of countenance given to the latter, is not a little striking and happy, considering the rude state of the art of engraving at this period; this cut is repeated on the 234th leaf, and on the reverse of the 280th is a spiritedly executed cut of Christ's public entry into Jerusalem. This is succeeded by the Hebraic pages, mingled and interlined with the German text." The present copy is large, having rough leaves throughout.
