PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.

THESE Letters having found unexpected favour with the Public, as with the Profession, the writer has availed himself of the call for a Second Edition, to revise and add to them. Having been adopted by many schools and families as an educational work, this new edition is published at a greatly reduced price, in the hope that may be taken into general use.

PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION.

THIS work was commenced with the purpose only to impart to Law Students some hints on the Art of Speaking, which had been suggested to the writer by experience and observation. It was expanded into its present form when, having been commenced, the writer was impressed with the conviction that to speak well it is necessary to be able to write well and read well. Hence the addition of these subjects to the original design. The writer trusts that they will not be found uninteresting or uninstructive.
