Whose heart your charms adores,

Fills with his tender vows the plain,

And favoring fmiles implores :

My Wishes varying from the rest

Demand a different boon,

And only afk this one request,

The mercy of a frown.

Ah! far from me thofe witching smiles

Those languid eyes remove,

Whofe charms my fenfes might surprise,

And tempt my heart to Love;

From Pity's foft dew, and from Kindness' mild

ray,

Like them it will fhrink from the frost of Difdain, But never like them will it bloffom again.

The stupid praise of Constancy,

Nature bids her fubje&s range,

All creation's full of change.

See the varying hours display

Morning, Evening, Night, and Day,

See the circling feasons bring

Summer, Winter, Autumn, Spring.

Shall the river's current full

Idly fleep a ftagnate pool,

Shall the pedant's mandate bind
The rapid wave, the fleeting wind.
