'Seldom has it been the present writer's fate to read so delightful a collection of country idylls as Mrs Francis Blundell's new volume of short stories, "Dorset Dear." Mrs. Blundell's delicate sense of humour in no way deprives her of feelings of the warmest sympathy for the country men and women whom she draws. She may laugh at her creations, but the laugh is always tender and full of sympathetic comprehension of her subject. The characters in the little sketches are vividly drawn, and Postman Chris, Keeper Guppy, and Betty Whittle all impress us as being real people whom we have known.'

T. P.'s Weekly.

'Do we make the best of the good that is to be found amongst our writers? The question came to me as I was reading "Dorset Dear," the latest book of M. E. Francis. Of course the charming style and delicate humour of this authoress has a wide appreciation, but she has never been wrapped in that atmosphere of enthusiasm, not to say worship, with which American critics, and, indeed, many English critics, surround Mary E. Wilkins. Yet in these new idylls of country life there is a character-drawing as sympathetically true, humour as quaintly delicious, and descriptive work as robust and beautiful as any in anything the American writer has given us. As proof, I ask readers to dip into "Postman Chris," "The Worm that Turned," A Woodland Idyll," to mention but a few of the tales in a book where all are worth reading.'

"

Nottingham Guardian.—' Every page is worth reading for some genuine note of human nature or some charming word picture of life in the fields and woods.'

World. A delightful book. This author's name is a guarantee of refreshing originality of matter and equally refreshing grace of manner, and both qualities are fully displayed in the collection of short stories.'

Daily Chronicle. Mrs. Francis Blundell's stories give a delightful picture of village life in Dorset, its humour, its wholesomeness, and its simplicity. She handles her dialect with consummate skill. The breath of the country blows through her pages.'

GLENANAAR: A Story of Irish Life.

Scotsman.-'A charming story, as good as anything its author has yet written, and likely to be enjoyed by every one into whose hands it comes.'

Daily Telegraph.-*“Glenanaar" is a story which keeps the reader thoroughly interested, not only by its succession of incidents, some of them strikingly dramatic, but also by its strong portrayal of Irish individualities. The author who can write thus shows that he has studied his people with that loving sympathy which is the master key to understanding.'

Daily Chronicle.-'When he unlocks "the cabinet of history" or "wanders in the gardens of tradition" Canon Sheehan is at his best. He can tell the tragic story of Ireland's wrongs with vividness and force.... "Glenanaar," with its descriptions of bloodshed, terror and superstition, makes a stirring, graphic tale.'

Nottingham Daily Guardian.-' One of the best Irish stories we have met with for a long time. It is written from the point of view of one who is in full sympathy with the best aspirations of his fellow-countrymen, and who knows their weaknesses and prejudices, as well as he admires their many fine qualities. Moreover, there is a peculiar charm in the style of writing.'

Cork Examiner.-""Glenanaar" is likely to vie in popularity with anything that Canon Sheehan has yet done. . One knows not what most to admire, the tenderness and delicate grace with which a beautiful story of love and devotion is unfolded, the sure, vigorous character drawing, or the descriptive passages in which historical scenes and features of Irish life проп...

and customs are touched

The King. 'Canon Sheehan's novels are growing in popularity and importance, and "Glenanaar ''will certainly increase his reputation. The book is as Irish as Irish can be, well written, and full of interest.'

The Times.-""Glenanaar" is based upon the vendetta which used to be declared against the kith and kin of any one who had given evidence in a state trial, and thus in the eyes of the Nationalist patriam vendedit auro. It is a fine subject for romance, and, though Canon Sheehan's book is one which will appeal more especially to those who agree with his reading of Irish history, it will also stand on its merits as a vigorous and skilful piece of work.'

a

Irish Independent.-' The most powerful dramatic story Canon Sheehan has ever written.... It is full of moving incident and bold characterisation. Not for moment does the story lose its grip on the reader. The situations are worked up with wonderful power, and there is not a character in the book that is without an individuality, always distinct, always consistent. "Glenanaar," we should say, is destined to be one of the most popular books which Canon Sheehan has given us as it is, in several respects, his best.'

Academy.-'Of the many books which Canon Sheehan has written, there is none which we have enjoyed more than "Glenanaar." Never has he more successfully portrayed the strange nature and the variable emotions of his countrymen, the warmth of their love, the fierceness of their hate, their generosity, and with it all their narrow-mindedness. ...

Twelfth Thousand. Crown 8vo. 6/-.

LUKE DELMEGE.

Evening News.-The Rev. P. A. Sheehan knows the Irish and their characteristics down to their heartstrings, and gives many a vivid picture of Irish life and humour. The book is exceptionally well written and full of home truth, coupled with much humour and wit. To an Irishman or a Catholic it must bear especial interest and enjoyment.'

Crown 8uo. 3/6.

LOST ANGEL OF A RUINED PARADISE.

A DRAMA OF MODERN LIFE.

Irish Rosary.-'If the reader wants a charming book, for light and bright reading, he may well be commended to Dr. Sheehan's "Lost Angel of a Ruined Paradise."
