The fole object of his inquiry is DIVINE TRUTH. In this purfuit his attempts are intirely confin'd to a plain, confiftent interpretation of HOLY SCRIPTURE. Where he may have fail'd in the execution, the one favour, that he has to beg of the judicious reader, as an acquifition, preferable, in his efteem, to every temporal emolument, is: That he would have goodness and condefcenfion enough to point-out his mistakes; promifing, on conviction, to retract fuch miftakes, both immediately and publicly. Having, likewise, this farther declaration to make: That, where he may, in any case, have taken the liberty to depart from POPULAR EXPLICATIONS; it is done with the highest reluctance on his own part, and with the most perfect deference to the judgment of HIS SUPERIORS: Who are therefore humbly intreated, to confider every peculiarity of fentiment (waving, at the fame time, the form of expreflion) as a matter of HYPOTHESIS only.
