CONVOCATION OF THE PROVINCE OF CANTERBURY.

Sessions Feb. 9, 10, and 11, 1859.

On Wednesday, Feb. 9, the Houses of Convocation assembled in the Jerusalem Chamber, Westminster, in obedience to the Archbishop's Writ of prorogation of Feb. 4. After prayers, the members of the Upper House adjourned to the Bounty-office, where their deliberations were proceeded with. The members of the Lower House remained in the Jerusalem Chamber.

The following members from the various dioceses which constitute the Province, took part in the Synod, although they were not all present at any one session:

CANTERBURY.-The Archbishop (Dr. J. B. Sumner); the Dean of Canterbury (Dr. Alford). Proctor-Mr. Oxendon, for the Clergy.

LONDON.-The Bishop (Dr. Tait); the Dean of Westminster (Dr. Trench). Proctors-Dr. Wordsworth, for the Chapter of Westminster; Dr. McCaul, for the Clergy.

WINCHESTER.-The Bishop (Dr. C. R. Sumner). and Mr. J. H. Randolph, for the Clergy.

BANGOR.-Proctors-Mr. J. W. Trevor, for the Chapter; Messrs. J. Vincent and C. Williams, for the Clergy.

BATH AND WELLS.-The Archdeacon of Bath and Taunton (Messrs. W. Gunning and G. A. Denison). Proctors-Messrs. Horner and Ommanney, for the Clergy.

CHICHESTER.-Proctors-Mr. C. Pilkington, for the Chapter; Sir H. Thompson and Mr. F. Vincent, for the Clergy.

There were five formal sessions held between the last business session of Feb. 12, 1858, and the sessions commencing Feb. 9, 1859-namely, on the 20th August, 20th October, November 19, January 14, and the 4th of February, 1859.

LICHFIELD.-The Bishop (Dr. Lonsdale); the Archdeacons of Salop and Stafford (Messrs. Allen and Moore). Proctors-Mr. J. Hutchinson, for the Chapter; Messrs. G. W. Murray and H. Burton, for the Clergy.

LINCOLN.-The Bishop (Dr. Jackson). Proctors-Dr. Jeremie, for the Chapter; Messrs. F. C. Massingberd and H. Mackenzie, for the Clergy.

LLANDAFF.-The Bishop (Dr. Ollivant). Proctor-Mr. J. Harding, for the Clergy. NORWICH.-The Dean (Dr. Pellew); the Archdeacon of Norfolk (Mr. W. A. Bouverie). Proctors-Messrs. T. Mills and A. M. Hopper, for the Clergy.

ST. ASAPH.-The Bishop (Dr. Short); the Archdeacon of Montgomery (Mr. W. Clive). Proctors--Mr. H. Glynne, for the Chapter; Dr. Briscoe, for the Clergy. ST. DAVID'S.-Proctors-Messrs. W. B. Thomas and J. Hughes, for the Clergy. WORCESTER.-The Archdeacon of Coventry (Mr. J. Sandford). Proctors-Messrs. R. Seymour and H. A. Woodgate, for the Clergy.

Dr. Travers Twiss (the Vicar-General) and Mr. Dyke (the Registrar-General) attended the Upper House in their official capacities. Mr. George Burchett officiated as Actuary in the Lower House.

The Assessors appointed by the Prolocutor during the sittings were the Deans of Canterbury and Norwich, the Archdeacons of Hereford and Berks, Chancellor Martin, and Dr. Jelf.

The Prolocutor of the Lower House and his Assessors being in attendance,

The PRESIDENT said-I wish to ask whether there is any matter which the Lower House left unfinished at their last sitting?

The PROLOCUTOR-There is. A portion of the Report of the Committee on Home and Foreign Missions remains for consideration. This house, in the last session, gave us leave to defer the further discussion of that subject, and we now propose to resume its consideration.

The PRESIDENT-You will, of course, proceed with that discussion, and report to this house when you have concluded.

The PROLOCUTOR-After concluding the discussion on Home Missions, the next subject for our consideration is Lay Co-operation.

The PRESIDENT-You will, of course, proceed with that subject when you have concluded your discussion on Home and Foreign Missions.

The Prolocutor and his Assessors then retired.

Diocese of Ely,

Sheweth-That your petitioners have reason to apprehend that an attempt will be made in the ensuing session of Parliament to obtain the sanction of the Legislature to the abolition of the rates immemorially imposed upon the property of this country for
