The Prophets.

ISAIAH, JEREMIAH, EZEKIEL.

Question. What is a prophet?

Answer. One who foretells future events.

Q. How many prophetical books are there in the Bible?
A. Sixteen.

Q. Was Isaiah the first prophet in the order of time?
A. He was not.

Q. Why is he placed first in the Bible?

A. On account of the importance and greater number of his prophecies.

Q. Whose son was he?

A. The son of Amoz. Isa. i, 1.

Q. When is he supposed to have uttered his predictions? A. Between seven and eight hundred years before Christ.

Q. In the reign of what Jewish kings?

A. Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. Isa. i, 1.

Q. What other of the prophets lived during the same pe riod?

A. Amos, Hosea, Joel, and Micah.

Q. What does the name Isaiah signify?

A. Salvation of Jehovah.

Q. Why is this name peculiarly appropriate to him? A. Because he foretells clearly the triumphs of that Gospel which is "the power of God unto salvation." Rom. i, 16.

Q. Why is he sometimes called the evangelical prophet? A. Because he speaks so distinctly of Christ and his kingdom.

Q. What circumstances in the life of Christ does he particularly foretell?

A. His sufferings and his death for sinners.

Q. How does he say he will be treated while upon the earth?

A. He will be despised and rejected of men. Isa. liii, 3.

Q. Why does he say he would die a painful death? A. Because we have all gone astray, the Lord hath laid upon him the iniquity of us all: he was bruised for our iniquities, and with his stripes we are healed. Isa. liii, 5, 6.

Q. What prophecy did Isaiah utter in reference to the spread of the Gospel?

A. The earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. Isa.
