THE Studies of Nature need
but to be known to be relished and admired by Readers of every dea scription. The event has proved that. myconjecturewas notdestitute of foundation, when I undertook the Translation of thatWork under the persuasion of its being acceptable to the British Nation in the language of their own Country. An impression uncommonly large, for a Book of that price and magnitude, was rapidly exhausted, and the demand continued to increase. This in, duced meto think of giving a new Edi
tion, with the corrections and improvements which every man will find it proper to make on reviewing his own performance. It furnished me at the same time with an opportunity of presenting in an English dress several interesting pieces of my Original, which had either ,not been translated at all, or onlyin detached morsels. In order to extend the circulation, and consequent usefulness of the Publication, it occurred to me that, by a small alteration in the form of the page, the five Volumes of the first Edition, even with the additional new matter, might be compressed into four.
While I was inaking arrangements, for the execution of this design, what was my astonishment to hear that a new
