bringing life and immortality to light by his Gospel, established the certainty of a future state, let us walk worthy of the vocation wherewith we are called, and seek the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. For, as that which a man soweth shall he also reap, it is manifest that the retributive justice of the Supreme Judge, will have respect to our works. In this present state boundaries are, indeed, affixed to our mental faculties; and being necessarily conversant with material objects, and actuated by sensible impressions, we cannot fully comprehend every minute part of the divine plan, but we know with such sufficient accuracy the moral obligations which the Gospel imposes upon us, that we are left without excuse, unless we perform them, and are so fully certified that, unless our practice be the result of high principles and just motives, it cannot have arisen from the religion which is proposed to us; that if in our actions and endeavours we seek not to glorify our Father which is in heaven, our good deeds are of no avail, and our faith is but as tinkling brass and a

sounding cymbal. Being here situated in the outward court (n) of the heavenly temple, we cannot as yet bear the unclouded lustre of God's revealed purposes; nor, until we be admitted to the adyta, (ND) where He resides in essential majesty and in perfect glory, shall we see things as they are, or comprehend the height and breadth and depth and length of his plans and operations. But, being in the mean while assured that every disparity shall be equalized, every obscurity elucidated, and God's government vindicated by his display of mercy and of retributive justice, let us persevere in well-doing; and, knowing that we shall survive the ruins of this earthly edifice, that this corruptible shall be invested with incorruption, and that these days of our sojourning in this transitory state shall give place to the life immortal, let us so look forwards with fear, trembling, and active religious practice, to that time, when He shall come again to judge both the quick and dead, that we may be found an acceptable people in his sight, and "receive that blessing which

He shall then pronounce to all that love and fear him, saying, "Come ye blessed children of my Father, receive the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world!"
