S. 9. Of the Cook.

She is answerable for the Care of the Provisions committed to her Cuftody, and for the Cleanlinefs of her Kitchen and Apartments thereunto be longing.

§. 10. Of the LAUNDRESS.

She is to account for the Linen given out to her, and to wash, with her proper Affift

ants.

§. 11. The HOUSE-MAIDS.

They are to do all the Houfhold Bufinefs.

All thefe Female Servants and the Nurfes are under the Direction of the Matron, and to obey ber Commands. And as the Duty of the Matron is become too great for any one Woman to execute in a proper Männer, it is intended to have a Chief Matron, a Matron for the Inspectors, and a Matron for the Nurferies and the Children in the Hofpital

§ 12. Of the CHIEF RECEIVING-Nurse.

She is to be a fober and discreet Perfon, not above the Age of fifty Years, used to the Care of Children, and acquainted with their Diforders.

She refides in the Lodge appointed for the Reception of Children.

She attends conftantly at the Receipt of Children, and takes Care none be received above the Age appointed by the General Court: She acquaints the Receiving-Clerk, when any Child is received, that it may be immediately numbered and registered.

She is careful in examining Children as foon as received, to fee if they appear to have any infectious Diftemper; and if the obferves any Signs of fuch Diforder, fhe takes care fuch Child is kept in the outward Room, and not brought amongst the other Children, till it has been viewed by fome of the Doctors or Surgeons of the Hofpital and if they find that fuch Child has any infectious Diftemper, fhe takes care that it is fent as foon as poffible to the Infirmary, and that an Entry be made, in a Book to be kept for that Purpose, of the Number of the Child, and of its Name, and if it has been baptized; if it has not been baptized, fhe is to acquaint the Matron therewith, who is to give Notice thereof to the Chaplain or Reader.

She takes care that the Nurfes appointed to attend in the Receiving-Lodge do their Duty, and that the Children, with all convenient Speed, be carried from the Receiving-Lodge to the WetNurfes Wards, there to remain till they can be fafely delivered to Country Nurfes.

There is always to be a fufficient Number of Wet-Nurses in the Hofpital, who are to be examined by the Matron, with the Affiftance of the Physicians of the Hofpital, to fee that they are healthy, and have good Milk; they are to behave foberly, not to drink fpirituous Liquors, and to take due Care of the Children committed

to their Charge, till fuch Time as they can be delivered to the Country Nurses.

$13. Of the NURSES of the WARDS.

The Hofpital is divided into Wards, each Ward to be under the Charge of a Nurse, who takes care that it be kept exactly clean.

No Nurfe is to be taken into the Service of the Hofpital, who has any Child of her own, or is above the Age of forty Years, or who has not had the Small-Pox.

They are to keep the Children neat and clean; to fee them dreffed and undreffed; to take care they rife and go to Bed at the proper Hours; to attend them at their Meal-times, and at Chapel, and to take care they behave decently and reverently; to affift in mending their Cloaths, and to teach them their Prayers, Catechifm, and to read.

They are accountable for the Linen and Cloaths of the Children, of their respective Wards, delivered to them.

They are to give the Children the Medicines which they receive from the Apothecary or Matron, and no other.

If any Nurse give any ftrong Liquor or Opiate to any Child, or has fuch in her Cuftody, the will be immediately discharged, and rendered for ever incapable of ferving the Hospital; the fame, if fhe permits any Child under her Care to drink Tea or Coffee.

§. 14. Of the MISTRESSES.

For the Government of the Girls, who are about fix Years old, a Mistress for each Ward is provided.

Thefe Miftreffes teach the Girls to work, knit, fpin, or fuch other Works as are proper for their Age; and also to read and to write when required.

They alfo teach them their Prayers, and Catechism, and inftruct them in the Duties of Religion and Morality. They take care the Children are diligent and industrious, and that they always behave with Decency and Modefty, and with due Reverence at the Times of Divine Service.

That the Childrens Perfons, Cloathing, and Wards, be kept neat and clean; and that due Care is taken of their Cloathing, and alfo of the Furniture of their Wards.

Each Miftrefs has a Maid-fervant. under her, to affist in keeping the Children neat, and with the Help of the Children themfelves to keep the Ward clean, and in order; and ro do all fuch other neceffary Work as is wanting.

S. 15. Of the Care of the SICK.

For the Care of the Sick, an Infirmary is prepared at a proper Distance from the Hofpital: There are two Phyficians, two Surgeons, an Apothecary, a chief Nurfe, and other Nurfes appointed to attend it. In the Infirmary an Apothecary's Shop is fitting up, for proper Drugs, Neceffaries, and Medicines, which are prepared

prepared by the Apothecary, according to a Difpenfatory which was formerly made for that Purpose by the late Learned Dr. Mead, and has fince been approved, with fome Additions, by the Phyficians of the Hospital.

The Infirmary is divided into Wards, for the Inoculation of the Small-Pox, or other infectious Distempers, and for common Patients. The Nurses attending each are kept separate, to prevent the Communication of any Infection; and the Childrens Cloaths who have had the Small-Pox, or other infectious Diftemper, are carefully aired, cleansed, and fmoked with Brimftone, before they are used again.

The Physicians and Surgeons are defired to vifit the Infirmary alternately; fo that one Surgeon and Physician may attend every Day: and one Surgeon is defired to attend at the fame Hour with the Phyfician, if poffible.

No Limb is to be taken off, without giving Notice to all the Phyficians and Surgeons to attend.

As a Number of new-born poor Infants, and others, in a deplorable State, are fent in, the Treatment of whom requires the utmoft Care, it is intended to build an Infirmary adjoining to the Hofpital, in fuch a manner as will be most effectual to the End propofed.
