3. By thine hour of dire despair;
By thine agony of pray'r ;

By the cross, the nail, the thorn,
Piercing spear, and torturing scorn;
By the gloom that veil'd the skies,
Oe'r the dreadful sacrifice;
Listen to our humble cry;
Hear our solemn Litany!

4. By thy deep expiring groan;
By the sad sepulchral stone;
By the vault whose dark abode,
Held in vain the rising God;
O from earth to heaven restored,
Mighty reascended Lord,
Listen, listen to the cry,
Of our solemn Litany!

XXVII.

Pange lingua gloriosi.

1. Sing, my tongue, the glorious strife, Sing the noble triumph gain'd, Raise unto the Lord of life,

Trophy which his blood has stain'd, Raise the Cross, on which impal'd Conqueror he our foes assail'd.

D

2. Lur'd thro' guile, the first form'd man From a Tree in Eden, stole Fruit whose baneful poison ran

Thro' the channels of his soul: Griev'd, his Maker, form'd a Tree, Cure for his mortality.

3. Meet it was, the subtil foe
In his artful project foil'd,
Soon should meet a deadly blow
From his weapon, which recoil'd ;
Meet, that from the poison'd source
Heavenly art a balm should force:

4. Thus, in plenitude of years, Sent from his great FATHER'S Throne, The CREATOR, SON, appears

Cloth'd in nature not his own; Deigns in mortal flesh to come, Offspring of the Virgin's womb.

5. See him, child of sorrows, weep, Born to suffering here below, Cradled in a manger sleep,

Birth place suited to his woe; See how Poverty's rude bands,

Swathe his tender feet and hands.

6. Hallelujah! to the LORD,
FATHER, SON, and HOLY GHOST,
By the saints on earth ador'd,
And by heaven's seraphic host;
Shout ye Sons of God and Men,
Thro' eternity, Amen.

1. CHRIST the LORD is ris'n to day,
Sons of Men and angels say,

Raise your joys and triumphs high,
Sing, ye heav'ns, and earth reply.

2. Love's redeeming work is done;
Fought the fight, the battle won:
Lo! the Sun's eclipse is o'er,
Lo! he sets in blood no more.

3. Vain the stone, the watch, the seal,
CHRIST hath broke the gates of hell:
Death in vain forbids his rise,
CHRIST hath open'd paradise.

4. Lives again our glorious King;
"Where O DEATH is now thy sting?
Once he died our souls to save;

"Where's thy victory, boasting GRAVE?

XXIX.

1. Again the Lord of life and light,
Awakes the kindling ray,
Unseals the eyelids of the morn,
And pours increasing day.

2. The pow'rs of darkness leagu'd in vain
To bind his soul in death;
He shook their kingdom when he fell,
With his expiring breath.

3. Not long the toils of hell could keep
The hope of Judah's line;
Corruption never could take hold
Of aught so much divine.

4. And now his conqr'ing chariot wheels

Ascend the lofty skies;

While broke beneath his powerful cross,
Death's iron sceptre lies.

T

5. Exalted high at God's right hand, And Lord of all below,

Through him is pardoning love dispens'd, And boundless blessings flow.

6. To thee, our Saviour and our King,
Glad homage let us give,

And stand prepared like thee to die;
With thee that we may live.

XXX.

1. The rising God forsakes the tomb, Up to his Father's courts he flies; Cherubic legions guard him home,

And shout him welcome to the skies.

2. Break off your tears, ye saints, and tell How high the great deliverer reigns;

Sing how he spoil'd the hosts of hell,
And led the monster bound in chains.

3. Say, "live for ever wondrous King, Born to redeem, and strong to save! Then ask the monster; "where's thy sting?" And, "where's thy victory boasting (grave?"
