LETTER I.

COU have often remarked in Converfation, that these last nine or ten Years have produc'd more Earthquakes and other unufual Phenomena in Nature, than ever happen'd in the World in the fame Space of Time fince the general Deluge. You obferved too, upon the Occafion, as I remember, that you must look upon them as preparatory to fome great Event, which feem'd to be near at hand, and confequently, as Signs fent to rouze Mankind out of their prefent Lethargy. The late very uncommon, as well as extraordinary Commotions in the Water, obferv'd firft at Portsmouth, then felt in Holland and other Places to the Northward, and immediately fucceeded by the total Destruction of one of the moft opulent, popu lous, and, to the Eye (as view'd from the River Tagus) moft magnificent Cities in Europe, naturally brought your Remarks to Mind, and led
