The Sunne,

The Moon.

must be great, for the house wherein it must hang, is the whole world. There must be two, because they muft ferve for two feafions they are lumine impares, because they are ufu impares: There is luminare majus and luminare minus: The greater is the Sunne, which is the Prefident of the day: the Perfians lay that it is the lightner of all other lights, luminare omnium luminum, and that it is the Prince and Governour of light. The ftarres doe get up to the top of the Epicycle, in his abfence they doc mourn, and meet him again with joy in their Epicycle, for they doe owe allegiance to the Sunne. It hath two qualities, light to direct, and heat to cherish. He is like a Bridegrome and like a Giant, faith David: Pulchritudinem fponfi videmus per lucem, vim gigantis per calorem, faith Austin upon the 19. Pfalm 5.

The leffer is to rule the night, At the rule of the Moon the Sunne doth not murmur, bat it doth give place unto the Moon, being inferior. Here is greater obedience and humility used then men doe ufe in this age; there is no obedience in the inferior to the fuperior, but murmurring and defire of cquality: The Sunne hath the rule of the day, the Moon the dominion of the night, both are content: In LordThe three first ship there is no fellowship: Before this fourth night the three nights without light. nights had no light, but were meerly dark: The Moon now fhineth in the night, it is the Sunnes deputy; In the night it is comfortable in the Sea by navigation, on the land by journey. The Moon by fome is called nocturnus Sol; It is cold and moift, My head, my fifter, is full of dew, and my locks with the drops of the night, Cant. 5. 12. In the time of her rule is the time of cafe and of filence. She hath a milde light, the shineth lumine repercuffo, with a borrowed light. The day by the Sunne is hot, the night by the Moon is moist. The Sunne is in the world as the heart in the body, and the Moon as the liver: The Sunne draweth up, and the Moon diffolves.

The Starrs.

Now of the Starres which God made. He maketh the Pleides and Orion, Amos 5. 8. they are the attendants of the Moon. Praise yee, faith David, the Lord which made great lights, as the Sunne to rule the day, the Moon and the Starres to govern the night, Pfal.336. In the Heavens bath he put a Tabernacle for the Sunne, Pfal. 19.4. The ftarres fixed have their tabernacles: God that made the world, and all things that therein is; He is the Lord of Heaven and of Earth, he dwelleth not in Temples made with hands Acts 17.24. The Ifraelites took up the Tabernacle of Moloch and the Starre of their God Remphan, figures which they made to worship, Acts 7. 43. There are ftella erratica, the Planets, and ftella fixa, the other fix Planets have their light from the Sunne: Six branches came out of the golden candlestick in the temple, Exod. 25.32. They had not only many Idols, but they had starres of their Gods, Amos 5.26. Siccuth and Chiun, their images in that chapter and 26. verfe, are Mars and Saturne. They called Barnabas Fupiter and Paul Mercurie Aits 14.12. They have forfaken the Lord, and forgotten his holy mountain, Efay 65.11. Tea Lucifer hath faid in his heart, 1 will afcend into Heaven : Oh Lucifer how art thou fallen, which art the Sunne of the

morning Efay 14.12. Venus is the morning Starre; the evening ftarre is the Mace-bearer to the Moon, and the morning starre to the Sunne. As touching the fixed ftarres, God faith to Job in his 38. chapter 31. Canft thou bring forth Mazaroth in their time? This Mazaroth is taken for the Zodiack Canft thou guide Ar&turus with his Jonnes? The ftarre Arcturus is the Northern Pole, in the tayle of Ursa major; in the Zodiack are the twelve fignes, whereof one containeth many starres from thence there is a correfpondencie in darons garment and in the Temple. It is the hand of God that hath framed ferpens tem incurvum, the crooked Zodiac, Jeb 26. 13. Galaxia or via laitea, is held by fome to be the paffage of the Sunne; by others, the meeting of the radiations of many ftarres, from thence is moisture. There is mention of Orion and the Pleiades, Job 38.31.Orion,when it appeareth, bringeth in Winter: fweet are the influence of the Pleiades, delitia funt Pleiadum: When those seven starres appear, the fame bcing in Taurus, they bring in the fpring and pleafant flowers. It u even God, faith Job the 9. chap. 11. verfe, that maketh the ftarres, Arcturns, Orion, and Pleiades: And Amos 5 8.In the dogge dayes the ftarres of the nature of a dogge, doe rule. Arcturus, as I faid before, is the Northern Pole, this itarre especially hath a principall ufe for direction to Mariners where ever they goe; for Arcturus and his fonnes is their chief mark, the load ftone will ever look toward that. They have an use in their influence, which is especially in the night. By Gods mercy the Mariner, by means of the loadstone, fhall know which way to fayle, which starre Arcturus, with his fonnes, the Lord doth guide, Job 38. 32, As for the influence, Sweet is the increase of the Sunne, and of the Moon, Deut. 33. 14. Regard yee mee not because I am black, the Sunne bath looked upon me, Cant.1.5. Sol ardet, The Sunne burned up Jonahs gourd, Jonas 4.8.So the Sunne is for Gods juftice as well as for his mercy; there is a pleafant dew, and a mildewalfo. Be thou faithfull, then shall not the Sunne fmite thee by day, nor the Moon by night, the Lord fhall preServethee from all evill, Pfal. 121. 6. And as the influences of the ftarres are sweet in his mercy, fo they are alfo the minifters of his Juftice: The Starres in their courfes did fight against Sifera, Judges

5.20.

Now of the pofuit ftellas, and as fome fay dedit ftellas. God, lay 17 Verf.poshin fome, did give the starres in way of dowry or a joynture: But the ber- ftellas. ter fort doe fay pofuit ftellas, that is, he fet them in order. He hath not fet them tanquam in centro, but tanquam in circulo, in excellent order. The Aftronomers doe fay, that the standing of the Sunne and the course of all the ftarres is in uneffable wifdome: The Sunne rifeth and goeth down, and draweth to his place where it rifeth; the winde goeth to wards the South, and compaffeth towards the North; the winde goeth round about, Preach. 1.5, 6. The Starres nor Planets could not be placed neither higher nor lower.

By the removing of the Sunne the corn, when it is fowed, receiveth moisture; at the fpring it maketh the Corn to appear; it, by its heat, ripeneth the fame. God,by making them, fet them in order; he

made them after the Heavens: He made the Earth first, Herbs after; and the Sea before the Fishes; the leaves are after the Tree: All the Host of Heaven, faith the Lord, fhall fall, as the leaf falleth from the Vine, Efay 34.4. They lighten the Earth, they are called ocæli mundi: we doe fee good and evill, and yet we doe doubt, but the light giveth difcretion to discern; but the light of mine eyes is not mine own, Pfal. 38.10. By their light we number, we measure, and order the Earth: It receiveth no light by mans induftry this light is lucerna pedibus, by them God doth impregnate, and extracteth the fruits: they rule the day and the night, and they ferve for the use of man. Abimelech lay in ambun in the dark night, but he rose as foon as the Sunne was up, to fight with Gaal, Fudge 9.33. So they have imperium & minifterium, the evening and morning is ruled by the Starres, the night by the Moon, and the day by the Sunne, yet they doe ferve the use of man by the devotion of the Sunne the dayes are longer and shorter; by them the light is feparated from the darkneffe; by the courfe of Heaven we have hot and cold dayes; the year, the moneth, the day, are reckoned and distinguished by the Hofte of Heaven, Ezechiel 31. 1. The Moon in the full is the Summer of the Moneth, the conjunction is, as it were, the Winter.

They are to divide light and darkneffe; this is for mans fake in refpect of the Creatures: The Sunne is the protector of man; and when he ruleth, it is the time of labour: but when the Moon ruleth, the night commeth and reftoreth ftrength : Who may abide the comming of the day of the Lord? Malach. 3.2. darkneffe is, as it were, the droffe of light, the pureft metals have their droffe.

Now of the Approbation, and God faw that it was good. No evill is to be afcribed to the conftellation of any starre; for all the starres that God made are good: The good of the light is vifible, there is in it a morall goodneffe ; for malus odit lucem, & quærit tenebras: The Adulterer, the Theef, the Murtherer, are the Children of darkneffe; so that in light there is a morall goodneffe. Therein alfo there is a pleafant good, The light is a pleasant thing, it is a good thing to the eyes to fee the Sunne, Preach. 11.7. Herein bonum and jucundum doe meet together. Falfhood and wickedneffe dwelleth in dark places, but veritas non quarit angulos. Fear was upon the Mariners when neither Sunne nor Starres in many dayes appeared, Acts 27 20. But Sol and folace dwell together they have bonum utile. Their ule and profit is to light; the Sunneis clavus vita, by them we have direction to judge and discerne. Hereby is the managing of dayes and of nights, alternatio temporum,& vicisitudo rerum: Hereby is a time to fow and a time to reap; Hereby is confufion of times avoided. So God faw it was good in all goodneffe. God maketh bis Sunne to arife upon the evill and the good, and fendeth rain on the juft and the unjust, Math. 5.45. So that the light is an argument of Gods goodneffe.

Now we will give you fome small fpiritual ufe. Out of them we may learn admonition of our end by their end; for the Heavens fhall be eion, diffolved, and folden like a book, all their hosts fhall fall as the leaf falleth

For the proceeding, The course of the Sunne and the Moon is good, and ftill in motion; Let not us then be idle, non vivamus ignavos annos & vanos dies, left that come on us which came upon the Ayptians, Pfal. 78. from Heaven God rained down Heavenly Manna, the wheat of Heaven, the bread of Angels,as it is in the fame Pfalme : whereforecast off lying, and speak every man truth unto his neighbour, Ephef. 4.25. Austin faith well, Cum occidit vifibilis Sol, occidat iracundia tua, ne occidat tibi Chriftus Sol invifibilis. The Sunne and Starres are wonderfull works of God. Ambrose faith, Sapientes admirantur magna, ftulti admirantur nova, ut cometas: the Starres, the Sunne and Moon, are the veffels of his goodneffe. David faith, when I behold the Heavens, the works of Gods fingers, the Moon and the Starres which then haft ordeined, What is man faid I, that thou shouldest remember him ? or the fonne of man that thou shouldest regard him? Pfal. 8.3. And as the vifible Sunne doth daily arife, fo faith Malachie, Unto them that fear Gods name fhall the Sunne of righteoufneffe arife, Malach. 4.2. Chrift is this Sunne of righteoufneffe: And the Church is fair as the Moon, pare as the Sunne, Cant. 6.9. The Church is full of spots, but cleared by the Sunne of righteoufneffe; the Church waxeth and waineth, and ftill is renewed as the Moon: the words of the Prophet is as a light that fhineth in a dark place, untill the day dawn, and the day-ftarre arife in your hearts, 2 Pet. 1. 19. In the time of the Prophets was darkneffe, but at Chrifts comming there was a perfect light: The knowledge of faith is as the morning light, which groweth lighter, the knowledge of reason is as the evening which groweth darker and darker.

Out of the Heavens we have an use for imitation. The Sunne riseth Imitation? visibly and continueth his course: We must continue in the good we have begun, we must learn courage of the Sunne, which rejoyceth like a mightie man to runne his race, that we may shine among the crooked Nations as lights in the World, Philip. 2. 15. that we should not only have light in our felves, but lean by the Moon, the Sunne, and Stars, to give alfo light unto others.

Men light not a candle and put it under a bushell, but on a candlestick to lighten thofe in the house: Let your light fo fhine before men that they may fee your good works, and glorifie your father which is in Heaven, Matth. 16. Let the ftreams of our light fuccour the poor; bc you liberal lights to the glorie and praife of Gods name: fo fhall we come from the light of the Sunne to contine in the everlasting light of righteoufneffe; Then fhall the light of the Moon be as the light of the Sunne, and the light of the Sunne fhall be feven fold, Efay 30. 26. This place hath no need of the Sunne nor the Moon to fhine in it, for the glory of God doth light it, and the Lamb is the light of it; the people which are faved fhall walk in the light of it; there shall be no night at all, Rev. 21. 23. Then fhall the just men fhine as the Sunne in the Kingdome of their Father, Matth. 13.43.

EREIN is the fecond part of the work of the fifth day, Here is the return of the Precapt. This is Gods water-work, firft the creating of the great Whale, then of the shoale of small fishes: It is faid creavit, and not fecit: you fhall finde this word creavit in three feveral verses only, of this chapter, in the firft, in this, and in the 27. verfe. Greavit is applyed in the firft to being; in this verfe to living, in the 27. verfe to understanding. In the holy tongue aget,in the firft verfe, is to be; Cara is to have life; and Sagar, in the 27. is to have underStanding: So that creavit goeth by degrees, from being to living, from living to understanding, which is the perfection of creation; the first of the Heavens, lacking fenfe, the other of Fishes and Fowls, having life; the other of Man, having underkanding. Barha, in Hebrew, in the first verse, is not only creare ex nihilo aliquid, but ex nihilo magnum quod eft miraculum. Artificers among their works The Mafter have one especiall, which they call their Mafter-pecce: God in his creation hath in the Heaven one efpecial Mafter-peece, namely, the fhining Sunne, having his being from the Creator; he hath in the Water the great Whale, who hath life from above; He hath in the Earth Man his Mafter-peece, who from God hath his ́ understan ding.

Whales,

These Whales are the great monsters of the Sea: In creating them, faith Ambrofe, Creavit vaftitates & ftupores: even at the fight of bim fhall one perish, Fob 40. 28. the Tunny is a great fish, the Whale is a great tyrant, The great Leviathan God hath made evento play in the Sea, Pfal. 104. 26. He hath made him, faith a Father, to be vectem maris, a barre of the Sea, fo great is a Whale Sathan the tyrant of the world, is compared to Leviathan the tyrant in the Sea, Efay 27.1. Æqualia habent montibus corpora, faith Ambrofe. The nature of the Sea is to be abyffus, thefe great Whales are immenfa moles in hoc abyfo: though he be huge, yet the Sea is deep; though he be ftrong, yet the Sea keepeth him in warde: Fob, in his 7. chap. and 12. verf. Am I a Sea or a Whale fish, that thou keepest me in warde: the greatneffe and ftrength of a Whale is declared in the 40. of Fob, the 20. verfe, to the 41. chapter: He cannot be drawn with an book; neither can his jaws be pierced with an Angle: thou canst not fill abasket with
