PREFACE.*

THIS Revised Book of Common Prayer is the English Liturgy transmitted to us from the Reformation, ALTERED ONLY SO FAR as to bring it into complete agreement with the doctrines and devotional services of all the Evangelical Churches. As little change has been made in the services as is compatible with the object of preparing a Book of Common Prayer which SHALL EMBODY THE DEVOTIONAL SPIRIT AND WORSHIP COMMON TO ALL EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS.

By the removal of those forms and passages taken from the Roman Missal and Liturgies, which have always been objected to, the services of the Prayer Book have been restored to their original integrity in accordance with the principles of the Reformers by whom they were compiled.

The Second Prayer Book of Edward VI.,
