ABOD

PREFAC E.

THIS work embraces the twofold object of facilitating a reference to the statute books, and of furnishing a digest of the matters contained in the statutes.

As the alphabetical arrangement is obviously the most fitted for reference, it has been adopted, as well in the subordinate as the superior titles throughout, except where, to preserve the connection of the subject, a different arrangement was deemed necessary.

In order not to swell the work to an inconvenient size, care has been taken to exclude everything which was not of positive practical utility; and, for that reason, statutes relating to matters of revenue, and all such as have become obsolete, or have been repealed or superseded, are given in general terms, with the brevity of an index; but all statutes containing matters which occur in the course of ordinary practice have been given fully, and the different provisions relating to each subject which are to be found scattered in the statute books have been collected and digested under the respective titles.

CHANCERY LANE.
