considerably more than £40,000: the eighth portion of
the Huth Library, nearly £24,000 (the total amount
realised so far is £262,871); and the 28 illuminated
manuscripts and two printed books sold by Messrs.
Sotheby, on June 3rd, no less than £52,360. Such
figures are, of course, quite exceptional, and have no
bearing at all upon books of the more useful and, in
a wider sense, more scholarly kind. Many of those
are cheap enough, and are likely to remain so. They
point a sort of moral, from which the reader must
draw his own conclusions.
