LINE ENGRAVINGS AND ETCHINGS.

The engravings collected by the late Rev. H. W. Beecher merit particular attention. He was not one of the dillettanti who affected gathering only the work of a single master or of a single school, but his broad catholic taste led him to appreciate the good in every form of graphic art. So he acquired, and delighted in having near him, specimens illustrative of the many forms it has assumed through its four centuries, down to the present day, when mechanical and photogenic processes are so largely applied in producing results.

There will be found in the collection, specimens of the severely simple works by the earliest engravers, some of them of exceeding rarity and value; works by the most eminent masters of the renowned schools, European and American, in the manner of line, stipple, etching, mezzotint, aquatint, lithography, plain and chromo wood engraving, photogravure, "voltaic electricity" and the strictly "unique" monotype. Some purchases he made in Europe, but he was a frequent and liberal buyer from the choicely selected stocks of the well-known print dealers of this country.

The collection, so widely varied, affords matter for every taste, and any specimen from it, cannot fail to be valued now, and hereafter as heirloom souvenirs. stamp has been impressed on them, guaranty of their former ownership.

Mr. Beecher seconded and urged as valuable, a proposition to add to the attractiveness of "The Sanitary Fair," in Brooklyn, L. I., A.D. 1864, by an exhibition of engravings, and his influence made the undertaking feasible, and successful. Three rooms in the "Taylor House were filled with 246 engravings, owned by nine contributors; the largest number from one owner was 86, which Mr. Beecher loaned.

These works are now to be within the reach of bidders who wish to obtain works in a sense doubly valuable, historically, as of the "Beecher Collection," and part and parcel of the first public exhibition of engravings held in the United States. These works are designated by an asterisk.

The collection of photographs embraces the finest known views of noted buildings of the grandest scenery of the Old and New Worlds, reproductions of paintings, portraits, etc., not often obtainable.
