In English catalogues the German vowels ä, ö, ü, are now resolved into ae, oe, ue, and catalogued as following ad, od, ud; but in German catalogues and dictionaries the modified vowels, whether expressed by the dots or resolved into ae, oe, ue, are catalogued with the simple vowels a, o, u, so that Schäfer or Schaefer are entered alike as if spelled with the simple vowel a, Goethe or Göthe as Gothe, Bluemner or Blümner as if it were Blumner. The latter system had to be adopted in this catalogue as the preparation of the manuscript was carried on simultaneously with the printing. Some other slight variations from catalogue order are due to the same cause. The entering of Periodicals in the General Catalogue is in accordance with the expressed wishes of some of the Professors, but a classified list of periodicals is added as an appendix. Printing (which was frequently delayed for want of Manuscript) began in March, 1895, and was finished in December, 1896. All books added to the Library during that time were entered in the Catalogue so long as the respective initial letter was not printed off. The Card Catalogue and the Manuscript of the General Catalogue were prepared, under the superintendence of the Librarian, by Mr. William Morgan, who was appointed for this purpose by the Library Committee. In the revision of the Manuscript the Librarian received valuable aid from Mr. William Taylor, Assistant Librarian, whose long service has made him familiar with all the departments of the Library, and from Mr. John Boyd, who also personally supervised the printing.
