Lord. May we have a name and a place, and an inheritance among the sons and daughters of the Lord God Almighty. May we glorify thee on earth, and afterwards dwell with thee in heaven. We bless thee for all the comforts and mercies of the day that has now come to a close; that as a family we have all been spared and watched over going out and coming in; that thou hast not permitted any affliction to overtake us, or any evil to come near us; that we are all alive before thee, and in the enjoyment of our usual mercies. Teach us, O Lord, so to number our days, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. Gracious Father, look down in the plenitude of thy mercy upon all mankind. Let those who are perishing for lack of knowledge have thy holy word given unto them. Let thy way be known upon earth-thy saving health among all nations. Let thy heavenly blessing rest upon the labours of all thy ministering servants, that they may see the work of the Lord prospering in their hands. Bless the whole Church of Christ every where. Visit with thy special consolations all the sons and daughters of affliction. Be gracious to our dear relatives, and neighbours, and fellow worshippers; may grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be multiplied to them all. Watch over us and keep us in all safety and peace during the night. "Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make us perfect in every good work to do his will, working in us that which is well pleasing in his sight; through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever." Amen. MATTHEW VIII. 18-34; IX. 1-9. MORNING HYMN. "We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God." OFTEN the clouds of deepest woe So sweet a message bear, Dark though they seem, 'twere hard to find A frown of anger there. It needs our hearts be wean'd from earth, It needs that we be driven, By loss of every earthly stay, Kind, loving is the hand that strikes, If sorrow's discipline can chase He was a man of sorrows-he, Who loved and saved us thus ; And shall the world that frown'd on him No; we must follow in the path Our Lord and Saviour run; We must not find a resting-place MATTHEW IX. 10-38. EVENING HYMN. "Let us therefore come boldly to a throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." FROM every stormy wind that blows, There is a place where Jesus sheds There is a spot where spirits blend, Ah! whither could we flee for aid, There, there on eagles' wings we soar, EVER-BLESSED God, we desire, on the morning of a new day, with grateful hearts, to draw near unto thee, and present unto thee, on the family altar, our sacrifice of thanksgiving and praise, for the continuation of thy loving-kindness towards us, both as a family, and as individuals. We have lain down and slept, and arisen in safety, the Lord our God having been our keeper. Thou causest the out-goings of the morning and of the evening to rejoice. We would call upon our souls, and all that is within us, to bless and adore thee, the giver of all our mercies-the God of all grace. Blessed be thy name, thou art ever mindful of our temporal wants; and thou hast, in the plenitude of thy mercy, made ample provision for the supply of our spiritual wants. Thou didst not spare thine own only-begotten and well-beloved Son, but delivered him up unto the death freely for us all. "Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins." We confess that we have sinned; and we know that the wages of sin is death; but, thanks be unto God, we need not perish, but may have everlasting life, since Christ Jesus has died for our sins, and arisen again for our justification. Helpless in ourselves, hopeless from all others, we look to thee, through Christ, for mercy, that we perish not. Grant us thy Holy Spirit to lead in the way of everlasting life. We thank thee for thy holy word, and for all the other means of grace we enjoy ; enable us, we humbly beseech thee, so to improve our privileges, that our own eternal interests and thy glory may thereby be promoted. Remember, in mercy, all our dear relatives, friends, and neighbours, and suit thy bestowments to their diversified wants. Hear our prayers, most merciful Father, for the congregation with which we are connected; may it be blessed, and increased with all the increase of God. Oh make us more deeply interested in the advancement of our Redeemer's kingdom in the world, and be graciously pleased to make us instrumental in diffusing the heavenly light, with which we pray that our minds may be richly illuminated. Hasten, O Lord, the latterday glory of thy church; bring into the fold of Christ the out-cast Jews-the lost sheep of the house of Israel; take away the dominion of the man of sin, and speedily destroy all the strong-holds of Satan. The harvest is great, but the labourers are few; O Lord, send forth more labourers into the harvest. May the gospel be every where preached with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven. Abundantly bless all committees and directors of missionary societies and religious institutions; give wisdom to their plans, and a blessing to their work of faith and labour of love. Have pity on the poor and destitute, and supply their wants. Prepare the dying for death; and teach the living to be mindful of their latter end. Be with us during this day; and while engaged in the duties of life, may we be mindful of our duty to thee. Let our thoughts be pure, our words true, and our actions just. Accept of thanks for every blessing, supply our wants, and forgive our sins, for Christ's sake. Amen. |
