O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all. We come into thy presence as it is meet, to thank thee for the mercies, temporal and spiritual, with which this day has been crowned. The good things of the present life demand our praise, but more especially do we bless thee for the hope of happiness in the life to come. We unite to thank thee for thy care over us through this day. We have escaped danger, for thy good hand has been upon us; we have been withholden from great transgression, for thy restraining grace has kept us; thou hast upheld and succoured and comforted us, to thy holy name therefore would we give all the praise. The day has told of thy mercy. The night, with its grateful curtain drawn around us while we rest, adds its tribute to thy fatherly care. The heavens declare the glory of the Lord, and the firmament showeth forth his handy work. O Lord, we adore thee with trustful affection, we come to thee and present the homage of our hearts in hopeful obedience. Accept us graciously in Jesus Christ thy Son, and may we, in committing ourselves to repose, experience the perfect peace of those who trust in thee. Receiving of thy mercy for ourselves, we would bring to thee in our prayer the wants and the woes of our fellow men. Thou hearest every groan, thou observest every tear. Thou seest, and canst heal, every wound. Visit in mercy the sick, and lighten their burdens. Hear the sighing of the prisoner. Solace the spirits of the bereaved, and teach the widow to trust in thee. O Lord, in thee the fatherless findeth mercy. Thou canst break the wrong-doer's power; thou canst give liberty to the slave; thou canst vindicate the oppressed. O Lord, we commend all to thee. May thy mercy be bestowed as their several conditions require; and let their varied sorrows lead their souls to thyself in penitence and prayer. Oh teach them to believe in the Son of God, the compassionate Friend of the mourner, and Saviour of the lost. Oh prepare us for all thy will. We know not what that will may be. Ever may we confide in thee. Ever may we obey thee. Sanctify our souls by thine Holy Spirit's grace; increase our faith, our love, our zeal for God. Render useful to us the good word of truth that we read from day to day, and may we find increasing reason to love the habitation of thine house, for that there thou refreshest our spirits, and enrichest us with the gifts of thy salvation. Let thy gospel diffuse its light and joy through every land; and where it is, make it more effectual. Be gracious to our own country. Enlighten our people— humble them-reform them by thy grace, that our land may rejoice. Bestow mercy upon our sovereign. Give wisdom to the queen's counsellors. Let our magistrates be good and upright men, and may all classes fear thy name. Guide and abundantly bless all servants of thine who make known Christ and him crucified, and may the churches of the saints, united, holy, and zealous, extend all around them the knowledge of salvation, through Jesus Christ the Mediator. Amen. JOHN XIII. MORNING HYMN. And be clothed with humility." THE bird that soars on highest wing, When Mary chose "the better part," She meekly sat at Jesus' feet, And Lydia's gently open'd heart Was made for God's own temple meet; Fairest and best adorn'd is she Whose clothing is humility. The saint that wears heaven's brightest crown, In deepest adoration bends; The weight of glory bows him down, Then most, when most his soul ascends; Nearest the throne itself must be The footstool of humility. MATTHEW XXV. EVENING HYMN. "Remember me, O Lord, with the favour that thou bearest to thy people: O visit me with thy salvation." REMEMBER us, O God of love! Through life's oft-changing scene; Remember us, whene'er we kneel Remember us, in sorrow's hour, Remember us, when fears arise, And fainting faith would fail; But oh! remember us yet more, Where we shall rest at last! O LORD, thou hast searched us and known us; thou knowest our down-sitting and our uprising, and art acquainted with all our ways. We would come into thy presence this morning encouraged by thine omnipresence and omniscience. Our heart's desire is towards thee and to the remembrance of thy name. We would not deceive ourselves; we would not attempt to deceive thee. Thou desirest truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part thou wilt have us know wisdom. Search us, O God, and know our heart; try us, and know our ways; see if there be any evil way in us, and lead us in the way everlasting. Thou hast mercifully directed us in everything to acknowledge thee. We may place all our desires before thee; we may seek counsel from thee in all our designs and pursuits, and we are permitted to ask for so much of success and prosperity in them as may be conducive to our real welfare. We prize this privilege. We would thankfully avail ourselves of it this morning. Hitherto thou hast guided us, and we have received help from thee, therefore do we continue. Bless the Lord, O our souls, and all that is within us, bless his holy name. May everything we do to-day be begun, and carried on, and finished in thee! In our house may we walk before thee with a perfect heart; in the world let integrity and uprightness preserve us. May our thoughts and affections maintain communion with thee through thy beloved Son, and |
