knowledge thy goodness, but we must also make humble confession of our own exceeding sinfulness. O Lord, we have sinned-we, and our children, and our servants. We have been chargeable with offences against each other; but most of all have we sinned against thee. In our outward behaviour we have sinned; but we have sinned more in the secret thoughts and desires of our hearts. Each is conscious of sins known only to thyself, but we all have sinned, and have reason to take to ourselves shame and confusion of face. If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquity, O Lord, who could stand?

Thou God of all grace, who hast set forth thine own Son as the propitiation for our sins, we beseech thee, for his sake, to regard us. Have mercy upon us, and upon our servants, and upon our sons and daughters, and grant that each one of us, confiding in the all-sufficient merits of the Saviour's sacrifice, may find pardon and peace with thee. And, if any of our number have not felt their need of thy mercy, convince them of their sinfulness, and bring them as weeping supplicants to the throne of thy grace.

Almighty Father, in entering upon this day's engagements, we implore thy presence, and assistance, and blessing. Preserve us from temptation; keep us from sin, from vain thoughts, from unholy desires, from evil tempers, from whatever in thought, or word, or deed would grieve thy Holy Spirit. Merciful God, sanctify us wholly, and keep us blameless. Whether we eat or drink, or whatever we do, enable us to do all to thy glory. We ask every mercy for Christ's sake, to whom be praise for ever. Amen.

WE beseech thee, O Thou who art clothed with majesty, and dwellest in light which no man hath seen, or can see, permit us to draw nigh to thee with reverence and with godly fear. May we now behold thee in Christ Jesus our Lord as a just God and a Saviour, reconciling the world unto thyself, and ready to bestow upon us thy mercy, even thy salvation according to thy word.

The way through which thou hast led us all our journey up to the present moment has betokened thy care. From dangers seen and unseen we have been defended; from snares and hidden evils; from foes without, and greater foes within, we have been protected. We will bless the Lord at all times, his praise shall continually be in our mouth. Let the remembrance of thy constant goodness excite us to greater diligence in the work of the Lord. Help us to consecrate ourselves to thee daily, as our reasonable service; and may we live as not conformed to this world, but as transformed by the renewing of our minds, that we may prove and do the good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.

At the close of this day we have to make our confessions, and to sue for thy mercy afresh. Oh wash us in the fountain set open for sin and uncleanness. Blot out the record of our short-comings to-day, and grant to us, through Jesus Christ our Lord, thine Holy Spirit to make us all that thou requirest that we should be. Oh for renewed hearts. Oh for a stronger and

more constant faith. We would renounce all self-dependence, and would rest on Jesus Christ our Lord. May he be to us righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption. May we ever be found in him, accepted in the Beloved, living by the faith of the Son of God, and at last admitted, for his sake, into thy presence, to go no more out for ever.

Oh

We pray for our friends, that thy mercy may bestow upon them blessings like those we ask for ourselves; and if we have enemies, we beseech thee let thy salvation reach them. Upon our neighbours pour down the healthful spirit of thy grace; and throughout our land let thy salvation be known. for the sending out of thy word to the ends of the earth, that men may praise thee from the east to the west; that the north may give up, that the south may not keep back, but that thy redeemed may come from every land, and the whole world may be speedily filled with thy glory, as thine own mouth hath spoken.

We implore thy blessing as a family. Let us individually and collectively have thy favour, which is life. Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish thou the work of our hands upon us, yea, the work of our hands establish thou it. Surround us with thy kind protection through this night, and let no evil come nigh our dwelling. Deal with us as thou usest to do to those that fear thee, leading us through the devious path of life, upholding our goings in thy ways, and preserving us to the end in Christ Jesus our Lord. We ask all in his name and for his sake. Amen.

ACTS VII. 15-60.

MORNING HYMN.

"Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron."

SAVIOUR, through the desert lead us,

Without thee we cannot go :

Thou from cruel chains hast freed us,
Thou hast laid the tyrant low;

Let thy presence cheer us all our journey through.

With a price thy love has bought us;
(Saviour, what a love is thine!)
Hitherto thy love has brought us;

Power and love in thee combine:

Lord of glory, ever on thine Israel shine.

Through a desert, waste and cheerless,
Though our destined journey lie;
Render'd by thy presence fearless,

We may every foe defy;

Nought shall move us, while we see our Saviour nigh.

When our foes in arms assemble,

Ready to obstruct our way,

Suddenly their hearts shall tremble,

Thou wilt strike them with dismay,

And thy people, led by thee, shall win the day.

ACTS VIII.

EVENING HYMN.

"Mine own arm brought salvation unto me."

CROWNS of glory ever bright

Rest upon the Victor's head; Crowns of glory are his right,

His who liveth and was dead.

Jesus fought and won the day;

Such a day was never fought;

Well his people now may say,

See what God, our God, has wrought.

He subdued the powers of hell;

In his fight he stood alone;

All his foes before him fell,

By his single arm o'erthrown.

They have fall'n to rise no more,
Final is the foe's defeat;
Jesus triumph'd by his power,
And his triumph is complete.

Now proclaim his deeds afar,
Fill the world with his renown;

His alone the victor's car,

His the everlasting crown.
