through the great High Priest, who ever liveth to intercede on our behalf. Pour out the influences of thy Holy Spirit upon us, to strengthen our faith, increase our love, enliven our hope, and perfect our obedience. Work in us, we beseech thee, O Lord, all the good pleasure of thy goodness, and the work of faith with power. We rest our hope of salvation on the finished work of Christ; we would tread in his footsteps. Keep us, O Lord, in the way of holiness, through faith unto eternal salvation. We desire, gracious Redeemer, to take thee as our leader through the wilderness, and to trust in thee for what we need in time and eternity. We cast ourselves upon thee as all our salvation and our only hope. Sanctify to us, we beseech thee, O Spirit of God, the varied circumstances of our lot; and whether in adversity or in prosperity, may we cleave unto the Lord as our portion and everlasting Friend. Guide and bless us as a family, and make us thankful for thy goodness toward us. May our children and servants be taught of the Lord, so as to give their hearts to thee, through Jesus Christ. Be gracious to our friends, and teach them to hope in thy mercy; and if we have enemies, let that mercy reach and save them. Upon our neighbourhood may the influences of thy Spirit descend, so that all may know and fear thee. Watch over us this night, and let no evil come nigh our dwelling. May we rest in peace and safety; and as our days and nights pass, may we be preparing for the night of death, when we shall lie down and rest in thee for ever, through thy mercy in Christ Jesus our Lord, through whom we offer our supplications and our thanksgivings. Amen. ACTS XXIII. MORNING HYMN. "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain." ALL hail to thee! all hail to thee! No more the helpless babe who slept No thorny crown is round thy brow, Angelic hosts before thee bow, Thy blood-bought flock all safely rest All hail to thee! all hail to thee! ACTS XXII. EVENING HYMN. "Isaac went out to meditate in the field at eventide." THE hues of parting day Are fading in the west, Invites the swain to rest; A welcome pause, a moment given, Now memory wakes the grief, The breeze's gentle sigh; Dreams of the past, that come with power, To haunt us at the twilight hour. Rise, groveller, stay no more, But stretch thy feeble wings, And strive by faith to soar Above terrestrial things; Where morn, and noon, and twilight gray, Are lost in one eternal day. GREAT GOD, thou art good, and thy mercy endureth for ever; thy loving-kindness is continued toward us, therefore are we the living to praise thee. The night betokens thy goodness, and the morning repeats thy works of mercy. O Lord, this morning we look up to thee with gratitude, and we present our prayer in faith and hope. Be gracious to us for the Redeemer's sake, and let thy goodness pass before us, that we may taste and see that the Lord is gracious. We thank thee for the safety and rest of the night. As we enter upon the engagements of the day, we would make a fresh surrender of ourselves to thy service We avouch the Lord this day to be our God-to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and commandments, and his judgments, to hearken to his voice, and to give ourselves unto him. May we be holy unto the Lord our God. Take us, O our Father, and keep us under the guidance of thy Spirit, and make us all that thou wouldst have us be. We implore thy blessing and protection to-day. Prosper our lawful undertakings, and keep us from every thing that is unlawful. Make us diligent, upright, and kind in the discharge of all our duties. Grant us wisdom to avoid temptation, or strength to resist it successfully if it accost us. May our affairs be guided with discretion, and may we rightly employ our talents, and improve diligently our opportunities of serving and glorifying thee. We love thy word, and would take it for our guide Let it dwell in us in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Holy Ghost, enlighten our darkness, we beseech thee, and give us grace that we may not be like children carried away with every blast of vain doctrine, but may we abide in the truth of thy holy gospel, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Spirit of the living God, establish our hearts with grace. We want to have the feeling that our sins are forgiven; that the peace of God is keeping our minds by Christ Jesus, and that we are serving thee with joyfulness and gladness of heart. May we be begotten again to a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ; and grant that this hope may be to us as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, entering into that within the veil, whither our forerunner hath gone. O Lord, we would learn thy will and do it. As we are taught of God to love one another, give us to abound therein more and more. Enable us also to love our enemies ; to bless them that curse us, and to pray for them that despitefully use us. May we have much of the Spirit of Christ, forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven us. Look down, we beseech thee, O thou Father of mercies, on all praying families, and vouchsafe to them the aids of thy Spirit, and let thy grace bow the hearts of such as have not yet learned to pray. ness flourish in our house. May the Let true godli young say unto thee from this time, My Father, thou art the guide of my youth. Impart to each of us thy grace, that we all may glorify thee, and let thy mercy guide, and sanctify, and defend us to-day, for his sake, who teaches us to pray to thee as our Father, &c. Amen. |
