Sm. folio, FIRST ISSUE, engraved title with portraits, portrait of the Duchess of Richmond engraved by W. PASSE, and the four folding maps (Ould Virginia, Virginia, The Summer Ils, and New England); some leaves and maps mended, but nevertheless a fine, UNWASHED, and extraordinarily large copy (11371 inches); russia extra, gilt edges;

EXTREMELY SCARCE

A VERITABLE FIRST ISSUE OF THE BOOK.

[blocks in formation]

1624 72 00

This copy is better than most of those which are now purchaseable. The title is of the genuine issue of 1624, having portraits of King James, Queen Anne, and of the bareheaded" Carolvs Princeps." The portrait of the Duchess of Richmond is a genuine original impression of William Passe's plate; and all the maps are in their original state as issued in 1624. It has also the extremely scarce slip of errata. The Matoaka portrait of course does not belong to the book.

Copies with all the maps of the first issue are very seldom met with. The following are some of the points which distinguish the maps of the first from those of the later issues:-The map of "Ould Virginia" has not the additions of "Walden's Oake," "Mountaynes Forest" and other names; the map of New England has Charles Prince" (in later issues "Charles nowe King"); the map of "The Summer Ils" has not "Penistoun's Redoute" and "Printed by James Reeve" in the right-hand bottom corner; the map of Virginia has 1692 in one top corner and 1693 in the other (altered to 1690 and 1691 in the later issues).

A long and gossippy description of Villegagnon's settlement (1555) on the Rio Janeiro, to which Thevet himself gave the name of France Antarctique. It was abandoned after a few years, but Thevet quitted the colony in 1556 and went homewards by way of Newfoundland and Canada. There are 32 pages and some woodcuts devoted to Canada in this volume; and therefore the book ought to have been included by Harrisse as the second article in his Bibliography of Canada; being preceded only by Cartier's narratives. Thevet appears to have had conversations with Cartier on the subject of Canada.

The descriptions of the natives and their customs, and of the natural history of the region, are very ample and full of detail; and the woodcuts are of remarkable excellence. These were afterwards copied by De Bry.

Basle, J. Bergman de Olpe, 1494 84 0 0

A volume of extreme rarity. Of the seven early Latin editions known of the Cosco translation of this celebrated Letter of Columbus, only two bear an actual date. This edition is doubly interesting by reason of the woodcuts. The Columbus Letter is here appended to a relation by Verardus of the capture of Granada by Ferdinand from the Moors.
