PUBLISHED BY HENRY HOYT, 9 CORNHILL.

PREFACE.

THERE is no attempt at originality in this volume. No one author gives so complete and varied an elucidation of the Scriptures as can be obtained by bringing together in one volume the best thoughts and suggestions of many writers. This book consists almost entirely of such selections, laboriously collected, directly or from the collections of others, from more than one hundred and seventy-five different writers.

The necessity of some such selections is obvious when we remember that the lessons for 1876 are drawn from eight different books of the Bible, several of them being those on which the fewest commentaries have been written of any books in the Bible.

The advantages sought are,

1. Notes explanatory and illustrative; especial attention being given to leave no point unexplained, particularly the more difficult passages. 2. The practical lessons are inserted in their appropriate places, and not left as an appendix at the end of the lesson.

3. The notes include the lessons for the whole year.

4. They are from a wide range of the best authors.

5. They are non-sectarian.

6. Parallel passages and references are taken from the famous Bagster Bible.

7. The dates of the events in each lesson are given also from the Bagster Bible.

8. Three maps, two of Palestine at different eras, and a third of the countries visited by the Apostles as recorded in the Acts.

A table of the pronunciation and meaning of the Scripture proper names occurring in the notes.

10. The notes are much more complete and full than those for 1875. 11. And all at a moderate cost, so as to be within the reach of the largest number.
