Extremely rare. That this is the first issue of the first edition is proved by comparison of the errata. The first issue merely has the one correction to page 108; whereas the later issue has five lines of corrections, which are inserted in this copy in slip form; these five lines include the correction of page 108; proving the priority of issue of those copies with the one line of erratum.

**One of the rarest Books in existence, having been printed at the expense of
the Count and Countess of Frangipan, whilst the Count was confined as a prisoner of
war in the Dorasel (Torricel) at Venice, and disposed of entirely by them as presents to
those who would pray for the Count's release. (He had already been fifty-three months
in confinement, the last twenty-two shared by his wife.) Dr. Waagen tells us THE
WORK IS AS REMARKABLE AS IT IS RARE.”

Some of the finest of the woodcuts are signed by the mysterious i.a. and I.A., about whom so much has been written. Others are, in Waagen's opinion, by B. Parentini, the scholar of Andrea Mantegna.

426 BOOKE OF COMMON PRAYER (with the PSALTER) 2 vols. in 1, sm. folio, black letter, fine copy in brown morocco extra, gold tooling, gilt edges, by W. Pratt Robert Barker, 1605 14 0 0 The editions of the Common Prayer which were published in the early part of James I.'s reign are extremely rare. Without being quite so valuable as the one issued in 1604, the above edition contains precisely the same matter, and is quite as difficult to meet with. It is besides in fine and perfect condition, while the 1604 book is always imperfect.

Liturgies-continued.

M. Batiffol has traced a complicated history with fulness of knowledge and charming lucidity. He unites in a rare degree the critical discernment and scientific candour which inspire confidence with an enthusiasm for his subject, and a love of antiquity which give life to every detail . . . how the services in the basilicas and in the monasteries, and the peculiar functions of Eastertide, were developed; the division of the canonical hours, and the structure of the calendar-all these have to be explained in their origin and development before we can understand the complex ritual which resulted in the daily office. Many a priest who recites his office daily will find much to interest and instruct him in this useful little volume."-Athenæum, May 27th, 1893. 429 LIVINGSTON (W.) Memoir and Life of, by T. Don Pascual de Gayangos, a Member of the Spanish Senate, formerly Minister of Education in Spain, a book-collector, a critic, and a scholar, is almost as well known in England as in his native land. It is fifty-three years since the Oriental Translation Fund produced his English translation of the chapters in Al-Makkari's Arabic history, which related to the Mohammedan dynasties in Spain. It was a work of signal importance, correcting and superseding (with the help of Gayangos' notes) almost everything that had been written previously, and it still remains one of the most valuable of the books published by the Fund. During the last twenty years he has been engaged in calendaring the Spanish documents in the British Museum, especially those relating to English history in the sixteenth century, and his labours have been gratefully recognized by all our antiquaries. His translation into Spanish (in collaboration with Vedia) of Ticknor's History of Spanish Literature is the standard work upon that subject in Spain, being enriched with notes by the translators, which supply additions and corrections that are wanting in the original. Mr. Gayangos' Bibliography of the Spanish Romances of Chivalry is more than a bibliography; it is also a literary history, and the most useful work of its kind.

Anno Domini . M.DCV. (1605) 50 0 0
This MANUALE, PUBLISHED by the JESUITS of JAPAN, is of EXTREME RARITY in
Europe. It is printed upon native paper in Roman letters, red and black, with musical
notes. It contains title; 2 prel. 11.; calendar 6 11.; text 414 pp.; Table, 4 pp.
Sign. +, ++, AZz, a-f, all in fours, and *, 2 leaves.

It is either the first, or the second, book printed in the far East in a European
language. The privilege and the colophon are both dated at Nagasaki in 1605; the
rival volume, Rodriguez's Grammar, is dated on the title 1604, but its privilege is dated
1608. Rodriguez, therefore, cannot safely be credited with the priority.

Twenty-five years later this venturous Jesuit mission was swept away and destroyed, in the midst of a religious massacre which has given many saints to the Roman martyrology.

only by a native of the country, and it must be a satisfaction to all well-wishers of
Italian learning, that an Italian librarian has undertaken it."-Academy, June 10th,

BERNARD QUARITCH'S ROUGH LIST, No. 134.

452 Milton. A PORTRAIT OF JOHN MILTON in 1630, painted in oil on a wooden panel (18§ × 152 inches) and said to be by Jan van Lievens

1630 25 0 0

He is seated under a tree, and leaning on his right elbow on a projection of the trunk, with a little vellum-bound, which he has been reading, in the right hand. His left hand is resting on his knee; his feet are crossed; and his eyes, apparently just diverted from the book, are gazing towards the spectator. He is dressed in a long black robe, with a white collar and wristbands. His eyes are a bluish grey; his hair a chestnut brown; and his face, although distinctly oval in shape, is strikingly like that of the portrait done by Lombart in 1670.

An inscription on the base of the tree is very difficult to read; but it appears to be "Jo. M. 1630", or "Jo. Mil. 1636 ".

453 MILTON'S PORTRAIT. George Vertue's copy of Lombart's design, engraved on a larger scale than the original, and having Dryden's verses ("Three Poets, etc.") beneath the portrait, a fine impression on a single folio leaf
