THE NEW PATENT ROLLER ORGAN

IS a Mechanical Musical Instrument, with bellows, reeds, valves, swell, and automatic finger action, using steel-pointed rollers, to produce any desired tune, using the rollers not as a series of valves, however, but as a pattern to operate the automatic fingers.

The "Roller Organ" has full-sized Cabinet Organ Reeds and is as loud and melodious as a regular cabinet organ. It will fill any ordinary sized hall and furnish acceptable music for any occasion, which by means of the swell can be greatly varied in effect. For dances, etc., it is most admirable, and where otherwise musicians would have to be engaged, it will save its cost in one night, and is upon the whole the most

WONDERFUL TRIUMPH OF MECHANICAL SKILL, AND THE MOST PERFECT MECHANICAL INSTRUMENT IN DESIGN, OPERATION, AND EFFECT THAT HAS YET BEEN PRODUCED.

THE ROLLER ORGAN*

[graphic][ocr errors][ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

THIS WONDERFUL INSTRUMENT! Performs all kinds of Music, Sacred Hymns, Popular Songs, Operatic Selections, Waltzes, Quadrilles, Polkas, Hornpipes, Jigs, etc., and can be played by anybody, even a child, without the slightest knowledge of music; at the same time it inspires a love of the art and powerfully incites to its attainment, and therefore should be found in every family.

COMMENDATORY.

We have only space for one testimonial regarding the superiority of this instrument, but it is from one of the highest musical authority. We append the following letter from the Editor of the leading Music Trades Paper, the Musical Instrument Maker

Moor Lane, London, August 13, 1885.

Messrs. CAMPBELL & Co., "Dear Sirs,-I received on Monday the Mechanical Roller Organ' and tried it yesterday. I consider it very simple in working, and easily adjusted in changing the tunes, which cannot fail to make it a favourite with the general public; at the same time it appears very durable, and will therefore bear severe handling. Another most important feature in my opinion is the Sweet Round Mellow Tone, which eminently justifies its title of ' Roller Organ,' and gives it a distinctive character from the metallic-like thin tone of the Swiss music boxes, and paper music instruments which lovers especially of sacred music will appreciate.-Yours truly, H. BROOKS, Jun."

We have resolved, for the purpose of introducing the "Roller Organ" amongst our musicloving customers, to supply any of them that may wish to avail themselves of this rare oppor tunity of acquiring one of these novel and beautiful instruments at the following merely nominal Price, viz. :-1 10s., with following Form, which must be cut out and sent with Order.

A POPULAR HISTORY OF EXETER, From the Earliest Times down to the Date of Publication.

[ocr errors]

BY T. J. NORTHY, F.S.Sc.,

Author of Exeter during the Religious Persecutions and Rebellions," &c.

(Over a dozen Illustrations; printed on Toned Paper, and handsomely bound). The Academy says:-"Mr. T. J. Northy, an Exeter journalist, has in the Press a Popular History of Exeter. The object of the publication is to place in the hands of citizens and visitors a history of old 'Semper Fidelis' in an attractive form and at a moderate price. The work is in the hands of the printers at the Western Antiquary Office, Plymouth, and it will be dedicated to the Mayor of Exeter."

The Literary World says:-"Exeter can boast several learned works on its history, but high prices and a not too attractive style of compilation and printing have combined to keep those works out of the hands of many who would otherwise have found for them a place on their shelves. Mr. T. J. Northy, of Exeter, is seeking to improve this state of things by the publication (in an attractive form and at a moderate price) of a 'Popular History of Exeter.""
