I

I drew near to her without any intention. only wished to behold the beauty of her countenance, the innocence which shone on it, fair as the brightness of a serene sky. I only wished to listen to her voice, to her words to all her peculiar loveliness. What the freshness of the waves, what the sounds of song, what the caresses of my mother have ever been for me, that was now her presence. I felt happy within the sound of her voice; at a look from her every painful feeling, every unholy thought subsided,-I felt myself a better

man.

Not she, not I, but the power which filled my soul's depths with the fire of a volcano,-that power caused this feeling suddenly to grow up into a consuming flame.

But I do not love her as I have formerly loved. No Serena then stood in my nightly path. She is my first, pure love.
