OCTOBER 2-3.

PSALM XXXvi. 6.

By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the hosts of them by the breath of his mouth.

JOHN i. 3.

All things were made by Him; and without him was not anything made that was made.

ΚΝΟΧ.

From the throne of the Highest the mandate came forth,

The word of Omnipotent God;

And the elements fashion'd, his footstool the earth,

And the heavens his holy abode.

And his spirit mov'd over the fathomless flood Of waters that fretted in darkness around; Until, at his bidding, their turbulent mood Was hush'd to a calm, and obedient they stood Where he fixed their perpetual bound.

OCTOBER 4-5.

PSALM XXVii. 1.

The Lord is my light and my salvation: whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life: of whom shall I be afraid?

JOHN i. 4.

In him was life: and the life was the light of men.

MORE.

Since first thy word awoke my heart,
Thy brightness beaming o'er me,—
Where'er I turn mine eyes, thou art
All light and love before me :
And while thy smiling face I see,
All bonds of earth I sever-
Thee, O Lord, and only thee,
I live for, now and ever.

Like him, whose fetters dropped away,
When light shone o'er his prison,
My spirit touch'd by mercy's ray,
Has from her chains arisen:
And shall a spirit, thus made free,
Return to bondage?-Never!
Thee, O Lord, and only thee,
I live for, now and ever.

OCTOBER 6-7.

ISAIAH xlix. 6.

I will also give Thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayst be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

JOHN i. 9.

That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

TOPLADY.

Light of the Gentiles, thee I hail :
Essential light, thyself impart!
Spirit of light, his face reveal;
And set thy signet on my heart.

Thy office is to enlighten man,

And point him to the heavenly prize, The hidden things of God t' explain, And chase the darkness from our eyes.

Show me I have the better part,

The treasure hid with Christ in God; Give me a perfect peace of heart,

And pardon through my Saviour's blood.

OCTOBER 8--9.

ISAIAH liii. 3.

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

JOHN i. 10.

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

COWPE R.

Lord, who hast suffer'd all for me,
My peace and pardon to procure;
The lighter cross I bear for thee,
Help me with patience to endure.

Ah! were I buffeted all day,

[upon; Mock'd, crown'd with thorns, and spit

I yet should have no right to say,
My great distress is mine alone.

Let me not angrily declare,

No pain was ever sharp like mine,
Nor murmur at the cross I bear,

But rather weep-remembering thine.

OCTOBER 10-11.

PSALM lxix 8.

I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children.

JOHN i. 11.

He came unto his own, and his own received him not

KELLY.

Oh, why do I wish to be gone?

Do I long from the danger to flee?
And shall I bear nothing for one,
Who was once such a suff'rer for me?

O Lord, let me think of the day,
When thou wast rejected of men,

And put the base wish far away,
And never be fearful again.

Nor less my perverseness forgive,

That when ease and prosperity come,

Thy servant is willing to live,

And his exile prefers to his home.
