John Macock, 8vo, 1650 55 890 HEYWOOD (JOHN) THE SPIDER AND THE FLIE. A parable of the Spider and the Flie, made by John Heywood, black Letter

red morocco, gilt leaves Tho. Powell, 4to, 1536 An allegorical poem, in seven-line stanzas, divided into ninetyeight chapters. It is illustrated with numerous wood engravings, in which the Master (Christ) is represented in his study, through the various changes in the allegory from the fly (the Catholics) first falling into the cobwebb (the spider, emblem of the Protestant) in the window, untill the end, when " The auctor cumeth in. And vpon hys beholding the wyndow fayre and cleane swept wythaute anie comberous or excessive flockes of flies he departeth."

The author is also represented in full length in a woodcut on
the reverse of the title, the same being repeated in the recto
of c. 4.

"I have, (good readers) this parable her pende:
(After olde beginning) newly brought to ende.
The thing, yeres mo then twentie since it begoon.
To the Thing: yeres mo than nineteeue, nothing doon.
The frewte was greene: I durst not gather it than,

For feare of rotting: before riping began.

The losse, (it on the frewterers hande lying :)
Had (in that mistery) mard his occupying.

This worke (among my poore workes) thus hath it past:
Begon with the first, and endeth with the last."

The above form the commencement of the author's "conclu-
sion" of his most singular production.
