Again, at page 13, the same book is entered under the science of which it treats, as follows:

ASTRONOMY. Mitchell, O. M. Planetary and stellar worlds......

11.5

From this sample it will be seen that, when the inquirer knows the name of an author, or the title of a book, or the subject of which a book treats, any of these will be a sufficient guide to show him whether the particular information, and the particular form in which he desires to obtain it, are to be found in the library.

In cases where a variety of topics are handled in the same volume, each of those topics is, not unfrequently, noted under its specific title. Thus, it often happens that the same book is enumerated under many different titles; and there are a few instances in which references are given to the same book, under ten, twenty, and even thirty several headings. It will be observed further, that, under the name of an author, an alphabetical list of his works is given, and that, under the title of a subject, the names of the different works on that subject are indicated. Perfection is by no means claimed for this Catalogue; but it is thought that, by its aid, the student and the scholar, as well as the general reader, will at once be supplied with a key to the rich stores of learning and amusement which the library comprehends.

In the latter pages of this book will be found a list of the bound volumes of Newspapers in the Library Room, and a table of the Newspapers and Periodicals in the Reading Room. The number of titles under which the library is catalogued is about 15,000. The assistance which the undersigned have received from Henry P. Filer, Esq., the faithful, experienced, and assiduous librarian of the Association, in the facilities which have been afforded, by him, personally and otherwise, for inspecting the books in the library, during the preparation of this volume, is gratefully acknowledged.
