APPENDIX.

1. How to spend the time whilst others are receiving.

This time becomes the more valuable as we grow in spiritual life. Spend it on your knees, if you can; if not, sit reverently and read or meditate. Hymns on Holy Communion may profitably be used (see page 91). Do not feel it necessary to rise because others do so.

HINTS FOR PRAYER.

The object of our prayers should be that we may glorify God by doing His will and by carrying out the purpose for which He made us; consequently the more you seek to do this-whether it be by active work, or by patient waiting and enduring—the more you will want to pray

1. About self:-For strength against sin; for grace to grow in holiness and to bear more fruits of the Spirit; for help to do your duty as husband, wife, child, parent, master, servant; for God's blessing on daily work; for guidance in perplexity, change of situation, proposed marriage, &c.; for wisdom; for grace to have good influence on others; for readiness to die.

2. About others :-For parents; husband or wife; children; brethren; god-children; friends; neighbours; the sick and suffering; the careless; the fallen; the godless; the unbelieving.

3. About Christ's Holy Church :-For God's minister; for blessing on good works in the Parish; for the Bishop; for the Church of England; for the Church in other lands; for missionary work; for a happy issue out of any special difficulty or danger that besets the Church.

Faith can move mountains of difficulty. The reason of small success is that we do not pray in faith, certain of success through the might of God. This is the best of all times for prayer. "Showers of blessing" are falling; it is our own fault if we receive them not. "The river of God

is full of water" (Ps. lxv. 10). Why should there not be plenty for you and all dear to you?

Holy Communion may be made practically useful in all the circumstances of life. Come when you feel most thankful. Come when you most want help or comfort.
