MY

THE EPISTLE. Heb. xii. 5.

Y son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when Thou art rebuked of Him. For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth; and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth.

VERI

THE GOSPEL. St. John v. 24.

VERILY, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

After which the Priest shall proceed according to the form before prescribed for the holy Communion, beginning at these words [Ye that do truly, &c.] See page 48.

At the time of the distribution of the holy Sacrament, the Priest shall first receive the Communion himself, and after minister unto them that are appointed to communicate with the sick, and last of all to the sick person.

But if a man, either by reason of extremity of sickness, or for want of warning in due time to the Curate, or for lack of company to receive with him, or by any other just impediment, do not receive the Sacrament of Christ's Body and Blood, the Curate shall instruct him, that if he do truly repent him of his sins, and stedfastly believe that Jesus Christ hath suffered death upon the Cross for him, and shed his Blood for his redemption, earnestly remembering the ben fits he nath thereby, and giving Him hearty thanks therefore, he doth eat and drink the Body and Blood of our Saviour Christ profitably to his Soul's health, although he do not receive the Sacrament with his mouth.

In the time of the Plague, Sweat, or such other like contagious times of sickness and diseases, when none of the Parish or neighbours can be gotten to communicate with the sick in their houses, for fear of the infection, upon special request of the diseased, the Minister may only communicate with him.

3.-Spiritual Communion.

For the help and comfort of those who are kept at home by sickness or other just cause and are thus prevented from receiving the Holy Communion at the hands of God's minister, the Church teaches such that, if they do truly repent and have a lively faith in Jesus with a thankful remembrance of His death, they may receive the Body and Blood of Christ profitably to their souls' health, although they do not receive the Sacrament with their mouth.

APPENDIX.

4.-Daily Prayers.

A form of prayer for daily use should be one that can be easily added to or adapted according to circumstances; and should include four things:

1. Thanksgiving for mercies of past day or night.

2. Prayer for pardon of sins committed, and of neglect of duty.

3. Prayer for blessing on the work of the day, and for the help of the Holy Spirit.

4. Intercession for others.

Make it a rule to read daily some portion of Holy Scripture, either the Psalms and Lessons provided by the Prayer-book, or at least one of the second Lessons.

The following short and simple prayers are suggested as a guide to those who feel the want of a settled form of private prayers:

Think, as you kneel down :—“ "I am in the presence of Almighty God." "Thou, God, seest

me."

A Morning Prayer.

LMIGHTY and most merciful Father, I humbly thank Thee for Thy mercy to me during the past night; for having refreshed me with sleep, and brought me in safety to the light of another day.

Have mercy upon me, and forgive me all that has been sinful in the past, and help me for the future to serve Thee better.

I pray Thee to take me under Thy care and keeping this day. Bless me in my work, keep me from harm and danger, and strengthen me to resist temptation; especially . . . . (here mention any journey, danger, temptation, or difficulty). Grant me Thy Holy Spirit that I may grow this day in grace and holiness, and deny myself, and do Thy will, and set forth Thy glory before men.

Hear me on behalf of all who are dear to me, and bless them; especially

all for whom you ought to pray).

Have mercy upon me, O Lord, and forgive me all the sins I have committed this day; especially (here recall to mind and mention any wrong-doing or neglect of duty.) Help me to be more careful for the future and more in earnest

Thou knowest, Lord, what is best for me; look not upon my unworthiness, but bless and prosper me in all that I do; especially (here mention any special work). Preserve me from thinking only about this world. Give me Thy Holy Spirit, that I may daily grow in grace and holiness, and seek Thy glory, and live for heaven.

Take me under Thy care this night; refresh me with sleep, and bring me in safety to the light of another day.

Hear me on behalf of all who are dear to me. [Look in mercy upon my dear wife or husband,
