GENESIS,

Chap. xiv. 18. 'And Melchisedek king of Salem'-' which is King of Peace' (Heb. vii, 2)—' brought forth Bread and Wine; and he was the Priest of the Most High God.'

xxvii, 28. Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of Corn and Wine,' even that True Wine and Corn (Ps. civ. 15).

37.. "With Corn and Wine have I sustained him,' for S. John vi. 55.

xxxi. 54. Then Jacob offered Sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat Bread: and they did eat Bread:' here we have the Sacrifice followed by the Feast upon the Sacrifice.

xlii. 2. . Behold, I have heard that there is Corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.' When Joseph, who is a striking type of our Blessed Lord, is in Egypt, then Egypt Heaven. Corn Holy Eucharist. we may live (cf. S. John vi. 50).

EXODUS.

Chap. xvi. 15. 'And when the children of Israel saw It, they said one to another, What is This? (A.V. marg.). And Moses said, This is the Bread which the Lord hath given you to eat' (cf. S. John vi. 31-34; and see Wisd. xvi. 20, 21).

And the children of Israel did eat Manna forty years'— the time of our probation here on earth-' until they came to a Land inhabited they did eat Manna until they came unto the borders of the Land of Canaan -so the faithful partake of the true Manna constantly (Acts ii. 42), until they come unto the borders of the Heavenly Canaan, which is our Country.

NUMBERS.

Chap. xv. 19. . . When ye eat of the Bread of the Land, ye shall offer up a heave-offering unto the Lord.' First the Sacrifice unto the Lord, with Elevation of the Blessed Sacrament unto Him, then Communion. xxi. 57.

'Our soul loatheth This light Bread'-careless have no taste for the Bread of God.

DEUTERONOMY.

Chap. viii. 3. 'And He... fed thee with Manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that He might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live. We need something more than mere common bread to keep us alive, even the Heavenly Bread of the Holy Eucharist.

Judges.

Chap. vii. 13. 'Lo, a cake of Barley Bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it, that it fell, and overturned it.' God hath chosen weak things to confound the mighty -that which appears to the world as poor and common Bread, is nevertheless mighty to the pulling down of the strongholds of Satan. xiv. 14. "Out of the eater'-the Lion of the tribe of Judah'came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness,' for Cant. ii. 31.

RUTH.

Chap. ii. 14. And He reached her parched corn, and she did eat, and was sufficed,' for so hath He promised, 'Open thy mouth wide, and I shall fill it' (Ps. lxxxi. 117).

I SAMUEL.

Chap. ii. 29. Wherefore kick ye at My Sacrifice and at Mine Offering? which I have commanded in My habitation,' saying, 'Do This for a Memorial of Me.'

Chap. xix. 77, 8. 'Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb, the Mount of God.' 2 CHRONICLES.

Chap. xxix. 27, 28. 'And when the burnt-offering began, the song of the Lord began also with the trumpets, and with the instruments ordained by David, king of Israel. And all the congregation worshipped, and the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded: and all this continued until the burnt-offering was finished.' Celebration.

Chap. i. 5. rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all.' As Job offered his sacrifices with a special intention, so also may we offer the Holy Eucharist.

xii. II. 'Doth not the ear try words? and the mouth taste His Meat?'

xxxvii. 5. 'God thundereth marvellously with His Voice: great things doeth He, which we cannot comprehend,' for 'He speaks, “This is My Body-My Blood," and it is done.'

PSALMS.

ii. 12. 'Kiss the Son-with the kisses of thy mouth, and cf. Cant. i. 2-lest He be angry'-at thy disobedience of His command 'Do This '-' and so ye perish from the right way.'

iv. 5. Offer the Sacrifice of Righteousness,' even the Lord our Righteousness.

-8. Thou hast put gladness in my heart; since the time that their Corn and Wine and Oil increased.'

xvi. 6. 'The Lord Himself is the portion of mine inheritance and of my Cup.

xx. 3, 4. Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt Sacrifice ; grant thee thy heart's desire '—the desire that He will remain with us under the veils of Bread and Wine-' and fulfil all thy mind.'

xxii. 26. The poor shall eat and be satisfied '—for He saith, 'Open

thy mouth wide, and I will fill it'—' they that seek after the Lord shall praise Him.'

xxii. 29. 'All such as be fat upon earth have eaten and worshipped.' xxiii. 5. 'Thou shalt prepare a Table against them that trouble me; Thou hast anointed my head with oil, and my Cup shall be full.'

xxvi. 6. 'I will wash my hands in innocency, O Lord; and so will I go to Thine Altar.'

xxvii. 2. When the wicked, even Mine enemies and My foes, came upon Me to eat up My Flesh, they stumbled and fell'. (cf. 1 Cor. xi. 29).

xxx. 4. Give thanks unto Him for a remembrance of His holiness.' Give thanks in that Blessed Sacrament, the Holy Eucharist, which was instituted for the continual remembrance of His Death.

xxxi. 21. O how plentiful is Thy Goodness, which Thou hast laid up for them that fear Thee; and that Thou hast prepared for them that put their trust in Thee, even before the sons of men!' The sweetness and blessedness of the Holy Eucharist, and cf. Ps. xxxvi. 8.

xxxiii. 18. To deliver their soul from death: and to feed them in the time of dearth:' for 'Whoso eateth My Flesh, and drinketh My Blood, hath eternal life,' 'if any man eat of This Bread he shall live for ever -S. John vi. 54, 51, 55-'for My Flesh is meat indeed, and My Blood is drink indeed."

xxxiv. 1, 8. 'I will always give thanks unto the Lord; His praise shall ever be in my mouth. O taste and see how gracious the Lord is.'

xxxvii. 16. ‘A small_thing_that the righteous hath, is better than great riches of the ungodly.' The Holy Eucharist, small and mean as It appears to the world, is more precious than anything Satan can offer. xliii. 4. 'That I may go unto the Altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness.'

1. 5. Gather My saints together unto Me: those that have made a Covenant with Me with Sacrifice.'

Ixiii. 1, 4. O God, Thou art my God, early will I seek Thee '-for the Church, our Mother, 'riseth while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household' (Prov. xxxi. 15) For Thy loving-kindness'-even the Memorial of Thy loving-kindness-' is better than the life itself.'

lxv. 4. Blessed is the man whom Thou choosest, and receivest unto Thee-by allowing him to draw nigh unto Thine Altar and receive Thy Holy Mysteries—' he shall dwell in Thy courts, and shall be satisfied with the pleasures of Thy House, even of Thy Holy Temple,' where 'Thou shalt show us wonderful things in Thy righteousness,' even the Holy Mysteries of Thy most Precious Body and Blood.

lxvi. 2. 6 Say unto God, O how wonderful art Thou in Thy works,' giving us in these Holy Mysteries, the Body and Blood of Thy Christ, veiled under the outward symbols of Bread and Wine.

'Thou, O God, hast of Thy goodness prepared for the poor' a great Feast, a sacred Banquet.

lxxii. 16. There shall be a Heap of Corn in the earth, high upon the hills.' A saying of the Rabbis that Messiah should be a Cake of corn upon the earth (N. and L.).

Ixxiii. 24. There is none upon earth that I desire in comparison of Thee' in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar, for Ps. lxiii. 4.

lxxviii. 25, 26. He rained down Manna also upon them for to eat ; and gave them Food from Heaven. So man did eat Angels' Food; for He sent them meat enough.'

lxxxi. II. 'Open thy mouth wide, and I shall fill it.' lxxxv. 9. 'For His Salvation'--even JESUS our Saviour is nigh them that fear Him,' for the Word made Flesh is nigh thee, even in thy mouth (cf. Rom. x. 8; Deut. iv. 7).

xcv. 2. Let us come before His Presence with Thanksgiving,' even that special form of it, the Holy Eucharist, which He hath commanded, saying, 'Do This for a Memorial of Me.'

'Give Thanks for a remembrance of His holiness,' i.e. thank God in His own appointed way, the Holy Eucharist, for This His own Memorial rite.

cii. 12. 'But Thou, O Lord, shalt endure for ever; and Thy Remembrance throughout all generations,' for we must show forth the Lord's Death till He come, by the Memorial of the Holy Eucharist.

ciii. 5. Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things'-even His Precious Body and Blood-making thee young and lusty as an eagle,' being strengthened with the Bread of Life.
