EXHIBIT R. ANNUAL REPORT OF REPAIRS. Made on the Summit County Reservoirs, and the Portage Summit level of the Ohio Canal, during the fiscal year ending November 15, 1903, by WILLIAM M. HILTABIDLE, Special Superintendent, On March 10th, 1903, Mr. Hiltabidle was appointed Special Superintendent for the Portage Summit reservoirs and the Summit level of the Ohio Canal to improve and keep the same in repair. The funds to accomplish this, nine thousand dollars ($9,000.00), had been appropriated especially by the seventyfifth General Assembly. The following report of work done during the past year was, like the work done in the previous year, paid for out of the above named fund. CANAL BANKS. The towing path embankment of the Summit level of the Ohio Canal was raised two (2) feet higher, a distance of three thousand (3,000) lineal feet by using earth and stone. FEEDER BANKS. The north embankment of the Tuscarawas feeder was raised one (1) foot in height, a distance of seven thousand (7,000) lineal feet. The material used to raise the bank was taken from the bottom of the feeder channel. WASTE WEIRS. An overflow or high water waste weir was built in the towing path of the canal opposite the Diamond Match Company's dock at Barberton. The waste weir is thirty (30) feet in length. BRIDGES. A new bridge was built over the feeder at the Tuscarawas dam. The float bridge used as a towing path at Summit Lake was repaired. A new towing bridge was built over the new high water waste weir at Barberton, and the towing bridge at Waterloo was repaired. DREDGING. The bars in the canal were removed by using the hand dredge at the following places: At Bartges street bridge, at Campbell street bridge, at Thornton street bridge, at South street bridge, at the railroad bridge, and at Morris' and Young's near Portage. There were about three thousand (3,000) cubic yards removed from the Tuscarawas feeder. Steam Dredge No. 7 removed a portion of the bars from the canal and about three thousand (3,000) cubic yards of earth from the canal at the bend above Waterloo. The Tuscarawas feeder was cleaned by using teams, road scrapers and men with shovels for a distance of sixty-five hundred (6,500) lineal feet and an average of eighteen (18) inches in depth. MISCELLANEOUS REPAIRS. The brush was cut from the towing path of the Summit level of the canal from Summit Lake to Wolf Creek lock at Barberton, and from both banks of the Tuscarawas feeder from the head gates to Main street, about one mile in length. A pair of new feed gates were placed in position at the head of the Tuscarawas feeder. The reservoir embankment at the State mill was repaired to stop seepage and leaks in the same. The grass was cut from the boating channel of the Summit levei of the Ohio Canal twice during the past summer. By Chas.
