4 We are become a reproach unto those who dwell near us

A scorn and derision to those around us.

5 How long, O JEHOVAH, wilt Thou be angry? for ever? How long shall Thy jealousy burn like fire?

6 Pour out Thy wrath upon the heathen,

Who do not acknowledge Thee;
And upon the kingdoms,

Which call not upon Thy Name.

7 For they have devoured Jacob,
And laid waste his dwelling-place.

s Bear not in mind against us former iniquities;
May we speedily meet with Thy mercies!
For we are exceedingly enfeebled.

9 Help us, O God of our salvation,
For the glory of Thy Name;
Deliver us and pardon our sins,
For Thy Name's sake.

io Why should the gentiles say:

"Where is their God?"

May vengeance for Thy servants' blood, which hath been shed, Be signally shown upon the gentiles, in our sight!

11 May the groaning of the prisoners come before Thee! By the greatness of Thy power,

Preserve Thou alive those appointed to die.

12 Yea, return unto those who dwell near us,
Manifold into their bosoms, the reproaches
With which they have reproached Thee, O Lord.

13 So we, Thy people and the sheep of Thy pasture,

Will celebrate Thee perpetually;
Through successive generations,

We will recount Thy praise.

PSALM LXXX.

1 O SHEPHERD of Israel, listen!

THOU, who leadest Joseph like a flock of sheepTHOU, who sittest between the Cherubim, shine forth! 2 Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh,

Put forth Thy greatness,

And come to our salvation!

3 O God, restore us,

And show the light of Thy countenance, that we may be saved!

4 O JEHOVAH, God of Hosts!

How long wilt Thou burn with anger,
Against the prayer of Thy people?

5 THOU hast fed them with tears for bread,

THOU hast caused them to drink of tears, in full measure.

6 THOU hast made us a cause of strife to those who dwell near us, And our enemies hold us in derision.

7 O God of Hosts, restore us,

And show the light of Thy countenance, that we may be saved!

8 THOU didst remove a vine out of Egypt,

THOU didst thrust out the gentiles, and plant it;

5 for bread Through excessive grief they refuse to take their ordinary food. Compare Ps. cii. 4, 9.

9 THOU didst clear a place for it, So that it struck deep its roots,

And filled the land.

10 The mountains were covered with its shade, And its branches were like the mighty cedars. 11 It sent forth its boughs unto the sea,

12

And its shoots unto the river.

Why hast Thou broken through its fences, So that all, who pass along the road, injure it? 13 The boar of the forest gnaweth it,

And the beast of the field browseth upon it.

14 Turn now, O God of Hosts!

Look down from heaven, and behold,

And visit this vine

15 Even the plant, which Thy right hand hath planted.

Yea, look upon the son,

Whom Thou hast made strong for Thyself.

16 It is burnt with fire, it is cut down!

May they perish at the rebuke of Thy countenance ! 17 May Thy hand be over the man of Thy right handOver the son of man whom Thou hast made strong for Thyself! 18 So will not we turn back from Thee;

Revive us, and we will call upon Thy Name.

19 O JEHOVAH, God of Hosts, restore us,

Show the light of Thy countenance, that we may be saved!

PSALM LXXXI.

1 SING aloud unto God, our Strength,

Raise a joyful shout unto the God of Jacob. 2 Chant a hymn, and strike the timbrelThe sweet harp, with the lute.

3 Blow the trumpet at the new moon,

At the stated time, on our solemn feast-day. 4 For this was a statute unto Israel

An ordinance of the God of Jacob

5 A revelation which He made unto Joseph,
When He went forth against the land of Egypt—
When I heard a language which I understood not.

6"I removed his shoulder from the burden,

7

"His hands were relieved from the panniers.

"Thou calledst in distress, and I did deliver thee; "Shrouded in a thunder-cloud, I answered thee.

"I proved thee at the waters of Meribah.

8 "Hear, O My people!

"And I will remonstrate with thee.

"O that thou, Israel, wouldest hearken unto Me!

"Let there be no strange god with thee,

"Neither bow thyself down unto the god of the stranger.

[blocks in formation]

10 "I am JEHOVAH, thy God!

11

12

13

"Who brought thee up from the land of Egypt. Open wide thy mouth and I will fill it.

66

"But My people hearkened not unto My voice— "Israel was not favourably disposed to Me.

"Therefore I gave them up to the obstinacy of their hearts,

66

They walked according to their own counsels.

"O that My people had hearkened unto Me! "That Israel had walked in My paths!

14 "Soon would I have brought low their enemies,

15

"I would have turned My hand against their adversaries. "Those, who hate JEHOVAH,

"Should have made a show of submission to Him;

"But their season should have continued for ever.

16 "HE would have fed him also with the finest wheat, "Even with honey from the rock would I have filled thee.”
