"How long will ye judge iniquitously,

"And accept the persons of the wicked?

3 "Give ye sentence for the poor and the orphan,
"Vindicate the rights of the afflicted and the needy.
"Deliver ye the poor and the indigent,

4

5

"Rescue them from the hand of the wicked."

They regard not, neither do they understand;

They walk on in darkness,

All the foundations of the earth are moved.

6 As for me, I have said: Ye are gods!

And, ye all are the children of the most High! 7 Nevertheless ye shall die like men,

And fall like other princes.

8 Arise, O God, judge Thou the earth;

For Thou art the rightful possessor of all nations.

PSALM LXXXIII.

1 O GOD, keep not silence,

Hold not Thy peace, be not still, O God.

2 For behold, Thine enemies make a tumult,

3

And those, who hate Thee, erect their heads.

Against Thy people do they craftily take counsel,

And consult together against Thy treasured ones.

[blocks in formation]

4 They say:

5

"Come, let us cut them off, that they be no more a nation, "And that the name of Israel be no longer remembered."

Truly, they consult together with one mind;

Against Thee have they confederated

6 Even the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagarenes,

Gebal and Ammon and Amalek,

The Philistines, with the inhabitants of Tyre.

8 The Assyrian also is joined unto them,

He hath become an auxiliary to the sons of Lot.

9 Do Thou to them, as unto Midian,

10

As unto Sisera and unto Jabin, near the torrent of Kishon; Who perished at Endor,

And became dung for the earth.

11 Make them, even their princes, like Oreb and like Zeeb, Yea, all their chieftains, like Zebah and Salmunna;

12 Those who say:

"Let us take, into our own possession,

"The habitations of God."

13 O my God, make them like chaff

Like stubble before the wind.

14 As fire consumeth the forest,

And as the flame setteth the mountains in a blaze,

15 So pursue them with Thy whirlwind,

And confound them with Thy tempest.

16 Cover their faces with shame;

That men may seek Thy Name, O JEHOVAH.

17 Let them be put to shame, and be confounded for ever, Yea, let them be brought to confusion, and let them perish; 18 That men may know that Thou, whose Name is JEHOVAH, Art alone the most High over all the earth.

PSALM LXXXIV.

HOW lovely is Thy dwelling-place,

O JEHOVAH, God of Hosts!

2 I long, yea, I pine for the courts of JEHOVAH,

That my heart and my flesh may rejoice in the living God. 3 Even the sparrow hath found for herself a house,

4

And the swallow a nest, wherein she may place her young, Namely, Thine altars,

O JEHOVAH, God of Hosts, my King and my God!

Happy are those who dwell in Thy House

Who are continually praising Thee!

5 Happy are the men, whose strength is in Thee— Who love the paths which lead thither!

6 Who, passing through the vale of tears,

Find it turned into springs;

Yea, the autumnal rain covereth it with blessings.

[blocks in formation]

7 They proceed from strength to strength;

Every one appeareth before God in Sion.

8 O JEHOVAH, God of Hosts, hear my prayer, Listen, O God of Jacob!

9 Behold, O God, our Shield,

Yea, look upon the face of Thine anointed.

10 Truly, a day in Thy courts is better than a thousand; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the House of my God, Than dwell as a guest in the tents of wickedness.

11 For JEHOVAH-GOD is a Sun and a Shield,

JEHOVAH bestoweth favour and glory;

HE keepeth back no good thing from those who walk uprightly 12 O JEHOVAH, God of Hosts!

Happy is the man who placeth his confidence in Thee!

PSALM LXXXV.

1 THOU didst show favour unto Thy land, O JEHOVAH,
THOU didst bring back the captive sons of Jacob.
2 THOU didst pardon the iniquity of Thy people,
THOU didst forgive all their sin.

3 THOU didst take away all Thine indignation,
THOU didst turn from the heat of Thine anger.

Restore us, O God of our salvation,

And withdraw Thine indignation from us.

5 Wilt Thou be angry with us for ever?

Wilt Thou prolong Thine anger unto successive generations? 6 Wilt Thou not again revive us,

That Thy people may rejoice in Thee?
Show us, O JEHOVAH, Thy loving-kindness,
And bestow upon us Thy salvation.

8 I hear what GOD-JEHOVAH announceth!

Truly, He announceth prosperity

Unto His people, even unto His pious worshippers;

Only let them not turn back unto wickedness.

9 Doubtless, His salvation is nigh unto those who reverence Him, So that glory shall dwell in our land.

10 Loving-kindness and faithfulness meet together, Benevolence and peace kiss each other.

11 Faithfulness springeth up out of the earth, And benevolence looketh down from heaven.

12 Yea, JEHOVAH bestoweth good,

And our land yieldeth her produce.

13 Benevolence advanceth before Him,
When He placeth His footsteps in the way.

4 The Psalmist goes on to pray that God,

who had on former occasions done so great things for his people, would now again restore them.

8 wickedness Heb. folly.

9 glory-the glorious manifestation of the divine presence.

10 In this and the following verses the

happy influences of God's favour and presence are beautifully described. 13 placeth His footsteps in the way. -i. e.

moves forward, to show His salvation unto Israel. The steps of God are represented as attended with blessings to His chosen people. Compare Ps. LXV. 11. Note.
