15 HE it is who formed all their hearts,

HE it is who discerneth all their doings. 16 No king is preserved by a numerous force,

Nor is a mighty man delivered by much strength. 17 Vain is reliance upon the horse for safety,

It cannot deliver even by its great power.

18 Behold the eye of JEHOVAH is upon those who reverence HimWho confidently expect His mercy;

19 To rescue them from death

To preserve them alive in time of famine.

20 We wait for JEHOVAH,

He is our help and our shield.

21 Truly, in Him our heart rejoiceth ;

Truly, in His holy Name we place our confidence.

22 May Thy loving-kindness, O JEHOVAH, be upon us, Since we look confidently unto Thee!

PSALM XXXIV.

1 I WILL bless JEHOVAH at all times,
Continually shall His praise be in my mouth.
2 In JEHOVAH will I make my boast;
The humble shall hear and be gladdened.

3 Magnify JEHOVAH with me,

And let us extol His Name together.

4 I sought JEHOVAH and He answered me, And delivered me from all my fears.

3 They look towards Him, and they are enlightened, And their faces are not ashamed.

17 Vain is reliance upon — Heb. a vain thing (is). "The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD." Prov. xxi. 31. "Neither shall he that rideth the horse, deliver himself." Amos ii. 15. See also Ps. xx. 7. cxLvii. 10.

PSALM XXXIV.

This is an alphabetical Psalm. See Ps. xxxvii. Note.

5 They — i. e. the humble. See ver. 2.

--

– enlightened — i. e. exhilarated owing to their confidence in God.

6 This afflicted man called, and JEHOVAH heard him, And saved him from all his distresses.

The angels of JEHOVAH encamp

About those who reverence Him, and deliver them. › Taste and ye shall perceive, for JEHOVAH is good. Happy is that man who taketh refuge with Him! 9 Reverence JEHOVAH, ye His holy ones,

For they, who reverence Him, lack nothing.

10 The lions suffer want and hunger;

But those who seek JEHOVAH lack nothing which is good.

11 Come, children, hearken unto me,

I will teach you how to reverence JEHOVAH.

12 Who is the man who desireth life

Who loveth length of days-to see prosperity?

13 Keep thy tongue from evil,

And thy lips from uttering deceit.

14 Depart from evil and do good;

Seek peace and follow after it.

15 The eyes of JEHOVAH are upon the righteous, And His ears are open to their cry.

16 The face of JEHOVAH is against those who do evil, To cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

17 They cry aloud, and JEHOVAH heareth,

And delivereth them out of all their distresses.

6 This afflicted man-pointing to himself. 7 The angels &c.-This description seems to have been suggested by Jacob's vision of angels, recorded in Gen. xxxii. 1, 2. "And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host and he called the name of that place Mahanaim" (i. e. encampments). 8 perceive - i. e. experience the truth of what I have just asserted.

18 JEHOVAH is nigh unto the broken-hearted,

And saveth the wounded in spirit.

19 Many are the ills of the righteous man,

But from them all doth JEHOVAH deliver him. 20 HE preserveth all his bones;

21

Not one of them is broken.

Wickedness bringeth death to the wicked,

And those who hate the righteous man are condemned.

22 JEHOVAH redeemeth the lives of His servants,

And none who take refuge with Him are condemned.

PSALM XXXV.

1 CONTEND, JEHOVAH, with those who contend against me; Fight Thou with those who fight against me.

2 Lay hold on shield and buckler,

And rise up to mine aid.

3 Draw forth the javelin, face my pursuers and intercept them, Say unto me: "I am thy salvation.”

4 Let those, who seek my life,

Be brought to shame and ignominy;

Let those, who devise mischief against me,

Be turned back with confusion of face.

5 Let them be as chaff before the wind,

And let an angel of JEHOVAH violently propel them.

6 Let their path be dark and very slippery,

And let an angel of JEHOVAH pursue them.

7 For, without cause, have they spread for me in pit-falls a net, Without cause, have they hollowed out pits for me.

8 Let destruction come upon them unawares,

1

And let their net, which they had spread, catch themselves; Into that very destruction let them fall.

9 But I will exult in JEHOVAH,

I will rejoice in His salvation.

10 All my bones shall say:

O JEHOVAH, who is like unto Thee,

Who savest the afflicted from him who is too strong for him— Yea, the poor afflicted from his spoiler?

11 Fierce witnesses stood up,

12

They questioned me concerning that of which I was not conscious.

They repaid me with evil in the place of good;

My spirit was disconsolate.

13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth, I humbled myself with fasting;

And may my prayer return into mine own bosom !

14 I conducted myself as though it had been my friend or brother, As if bewailing a mother, I was bowed down with mourning. 15 But when I was ready to fall,

They rejoiced and assembled together,

They assembled themselves together against me;

shew that he prayed for blessings and not curses upon his enemies.

13 into mine own bosom-This refers to the custom of folding the garment and carrying gifts &c. in the lap. "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom." Luke vi. 38.

15 when I was ready to fall - Heb. at my halting. i. e. when calamities pressed heavily upon me, and I was sinking under them.

Railing at me for that of which I was not conscious,

Unceasingly did they revile me.

16 With profane jesters for bread,

They gnashed their teeth at me.

17 Lord, how long wilt Thou look on? Save me from their destructions

My life from the lions.

18 I will celebrate Thee in the great assembly,

Before the countless multitude will I praise Thee.

19 Let not those, who unjustly are mine enemies, rejoice over me, Let not those, who without cause hate me, wink with the eye. 20 For they speak words not peaceful;

Against the quiet in the land they devise deceitful things. 21 They open wide their mouths at me, they say: "Aha, aha! Our eye hath beheld !"

THOU, O JEHOVAH, hast beheld; be not Thou silent;

O Lord, be not Thou far from me.

23 Arouse Thyself and awake to assert my right— O my God and my Lord, to plead my cause.

24 Give sentence for me, according to Thy righteousness, JEHOVAH, my God!

And let them not rejoice over me.

25 Let them not say in their hearts: "Aha! Our desire!” Let them not say: "We have destroyed him."
