[The outside cover had the autograph signature, “W. M. Thackeray, 1830." On the front and back covers and also on the half-title were three original sketches by Thackeray, that on the half-title being signed "W. M. T." Beneath this were 12 lines signed "F." These also appeared to be in the autograph of Thackeray, and probably were so, though signed as stated.--ED.]

Expositio problematum Aristotelis, lit. goth., printed in double columns in two sizes of type, the large initial letters painted by hand in red, blue and violet, with flowing ornamental decoration, many of them illuminated in gold, the large initial I on the first page of text being a fine example of the art; this page is surrounded by a square border within gilt lines of floral decoration in gold and colours of elegant design, containing the arms of a Cardinal to whom the book belonged, bound in Niger morocco, tooled in the Venetian manner, with leather clasps, by Douglas Cockerell (Venet.), J. [Commonly known as "the Black Acts." It was first printed by Lekprevik with a colophon dated xii. day of October, 1566, but only very few copies had been issued when it was withdrawn, and certain Acts considered obnoxious by the reformers were omitted. It is for this reason that folio cxxxiii. is absent altogether. In certain particulars different copies vary; this copy had the title in seven lines and the Queen's Privilege in twenty-nine.— Catalogue.]
