[The number of plates in the first-named three volumes varies in practice; usually but 300 are found, at other times 308, and occasionally 310, as in this instance. An absolutely complete copy would, however, contain, besides titles and dedications: Vol i., 138 plates, with 191 portraits of gentlemen; Vol. ii., 116 plates, with 136 portraits of ladies; Vol. iii., 102 plates of historical and fancy subjects. Proof impressions were issued in 60 parts at £2 12s. 6d. each.ED.]
