[It may be mentioned that at this sale (Lots 268-277) a number of autograph letters of Dean Swift and Alexander Pope were disposed of. These included the original correspondence respecting the publication of "Gulliver's Travels" and the original agreement for the publication of "The Miscellanies" by Swift and Pope. As these are of literary interest, in addition to their being valuable as autographs and relics of two very celebrated writers, they are shortly described below.-ED.]

5466 Correspondence about the Publication of Gulliver's Travels, a long Letter (1 page folio) to Mr. Motte, written by Swift in a feigned hand and signed Richard Sympson, dated August 8, 1726, offering the Manuscript of Gulliver's Travels. for £200. On a slip of paper is a postscript requesting that it should be published before Christmas, signed “R. Sympson," also Mr. Motte's reply to the proposal and a fragment of another letter from Motte relating to the payment of the £200 and asking for time (268) Pearson, £86 2s. 5467 Pope (Alexander).
