Preface.

HIS volume is the realisation of a purpose fondly cherished by its author during the latter years of his life, but which from infirmity of health, gradually increasing to the day of his death, he was never enabled to realise. The various addresses composing it were originally issued separately; and all of them obtained in that form a wide circulation: of "One Life," for example, the first address in the volume, one hundred and twenty thousand copies have thus been sold. This fact alone speaks highly of their intrinsic merits.

There are now many attractive volumes of addresses to children, and by writers whose ability is unquestionable; but, I venture to think that among all these the present volume stands unique. For, under ever varying figure and illustration it dwells throughout upon the one thing— CONVERSION—as the true and only starting-point of the Christian life; and that in a style which is at once sympathetic, simple, fervent, and impressive. These indeed were the outstanding characteristics of the author's Bible-class teaching during life, and which God highly honoured to be a blessing to many who now fill important positions in the ministry, in the mission field, and in professional and business life.

Having this high opinion of the merits of these addresses, and having been privileged to enjoy for more than twenty years the intimate friendship of the author, I can truly say that my work as editor has been a labour of love. With regard to alterations I must add that a few paragraphs have
