1884

The most important Bibliographical work that has ever appeared in this country, since, although it is limited to the first. hundred and seventy years of English press-work,. it is more nearly exhaustive and final in character than any other similar attempt. Collations are given of all the books which require it, and the scheme of description is elaborated with extraordinary accuracy. The work is indispensable for reference in every library in Great Britain and America.

THE present Catalogue has been drawn up in accordance with the rules observed in the compilation of the General Catalogue of Printed Books in the British Museum.

It is alphabetical, according to authors' names, the Museum system being followed for anonymous and pseudonymous works; for books published under initials; for Bibles, Liturgies and other works of a special character.

It is accompanied by a very full Index of Subjects with certain special class headings, such as Ballads, Plays, Poems, Songs, etc., in which the titles of the works, with their dates, are set forth in alphabetical order. Each article so mentioned has also its own separate entry in the Index.

Subjoined to this is an ample Index of the Printers, Booksellers and Stationers whose productions are here catalogued. After each name the dates are given within which, so far as ascertainable, such Printer, Bookseller or Stationer produced or sold his books. The headings under which such works appear in the Catalogue are given in italics.

The Keeper of the Department has much pleasure in acknowledging the able assistance he has received from Mr. GREGORY W. ECCLES in preparing the Catalogue for the Press, and in revising the proof-sheets.
