An excellent Polyglot edition of the Bible, in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish, now very scarce. All of them are printed in 12mo. size, so that the Hebrew, English, Greek and Latin occupy four quarters of each left-hand page, and the others occupy the right hand. At the end of the volume are, Variæ lectiones in versionem septuaginta virorum, Novum Testamentum Græcum, Pentateuchum Hebræo-Samaritanum, and the whole of the New Testament in Syriac.

Biblia Græca. NOVUM INSTRUMENTUM, Græce et Latine, diligenter ab ERASMO ROTERODAMO recognitum et emendatum, cum annotationibus, folio, EDITIO PRINCEPS, very fine, clean, and tall copy, in blue morocco, joints, gilt edges, by Rodwell, from Archdeacon Cotton's library, £10. 108 Basilea, 1516

A most desirable copy of this interesting volume, which, as the first published Greek Testament, must always claim a prominent place in every library.

Hibbert's copy fetched £10 10s; Dr. Hawtrey's, £10. 15s; and it is now some time since any copy has occurred for sale. Its extreme rarity is dwelt upon by Horne and other bibliographers.

The disputed text of the three witnesses,' 1 John v. 7, is not contained in this first edition with the annotations of Erasmus.

This is the First Edition of the Bible in the Ladinish Dialect of the Romanese Language spoken by the Ladins, who reside on the confines of Italy.

This version, made for the use of the Protestants of the Grison country, and printed under the patronage of George I. of England, is rarely to be found in fine condition. This copy has not the dedication to George I., which was inserted only in the copies intended for England.

Priced, 1834, H. Bohn, £12. 12s Ditto, £8. 8s. Dr. Hawtrey's copy fetched £8. in 1853.

Still the best work on Fishes as far as the plates are concerned. Perfect copies are rare in this country, owing to an accident which destroyed the greater portion of the last six volumes immediately after their publication.

"One only regrets that a work so essential to every ichthyologist should be so expensive."

A great deal of confusion is experienced from ignorant or incorrect descriptions of Blume's works. It may be useful to state that the Orchidées de l'Archipel Indien' is the same as the Nova Series of the Flora Javæ,' but was put lished as a separate work with another title, in order to serve as a monograph of the 'Orchids' found in that part of the world.

In the edition issued under the title of ',Orchidées," there are, however, remarks on each plant in French (following the Latin text), which are not contained in the edition published under the title of "Flora Javæ, Nova Series."

The present volume, Brunet observes, is little known. It appears to have been the production of a London press, and apparently of the year 1583. Bruno on his return from thence to Italy, was arrested at Venice, and from thence conducted to Rome, where he was burned by a sentence of the Inquisition as an atheist and teacher of irreligion.

THE ABOVE IS A GOOD FOUNDATION TOWARDS A COMPLETE SET OF GIORDANO BRUNO'S WORKS. Abroad they are much rarer even than in this country, as may be seen in CLEMENT, Bibliotheque curieuse, where no fewer than 40 pages are devoted to the subject, and a host of authorities cited.

"GIORDANO BRUNO WAS THE FIRST PERSON AMONG THE MODERNS WHO ATTEMPTED ANY MATERIAL INNOVATION IN PHILOSOPHY. HE WAS A MAN OF EXTRAORDINARY TALENTS AND METAPHYSICAL ACUTENESS. To great powers of mind, he added a lofty spirit, which arose superior to prejudice, and would admit nothing as true without examination. Fond of retirement and study, he entered into a monastery of Dominicans; but the freedom of his opinions, and the boldness of the censure which he passed upon the irregularities of the fraternity, soon created him enemies, and subjected him to persecutions, which obliged him to quit his order and his country, leaving behind him all his property. In the year 1582, he withdrew to Geneva, where his heretical opinions gave offence to Calvin and Beza, and he was soon obliged to provide for his safety by flight. After a short stay at Lyons, he came to Paris. Here, his innovating spirit recommended him to the notice of multitudes, who at this time declared open hostility against the authority of Aristotle. In a public disputation, held in the Royal Academy,

in 1586, he defended three days successively, certain propositions concerning nature and the world, which, together with brief heads of the arguments, he afterwards published in Saxony, under the title of Acrotismus, or "Reasons of the physical Articles proposed against the Peripatetics at Paris." The contempt with which Bruno, in the course of these debates, treated Aristotle, exposed him to the resentment of the academic professors, who were zealous advocates for the old system; and he found it expedient to leave France. He now went to England, in the train of the French Ambassador, Castelneau, where he was hospitably received by SIR PHILIP SIDNEY, and SIR FULKE GREVILLE, and was introduced to QUEEN ELIZABETH. He afterwards visited Wittenberg, Helmstadt, and Frankfort. His next residence was at Padua; there, the boldness with which he taught his new doctrines, and inveighed against the court of Rome and the

Court of Inquisition at Venice, as an apostate from
the faith; in consequence of which, he was con-
veyed as a prisoner to Rome, and, after two years'
confinement, was condemned to the flames. This
sentence was executed in the year 1600: a severe
fate, which, though it has been ascribed to the im-
piety of his tenets, was more properly the effect of
his desertion from the Romish Church, and of his
daring attacks upon the majesty of the pontificate." 967
Enfield's Hist. of Philosophy.

"But the most interesting of the distinguished
characters of this period, was Giordano Bruno, a
man as remarkable for his fate as for his opinions
and his talents. To a powerful and comprehensive
mind, he joined a lively and fertile imagination, and
was deeply versed in the Philosophy of the Ancients,
Mathematics, Physics, and Astronomy, with a taste
highly cultivated by classical reading."
