IN publishing any Collection of Writings, it has been fo general a custom to say something of their Author, that, although the neceffity of this ufage fhould not appear, it may be improper wholly to omit it. It is certain, that the merit or the faults of an author are intrinfic; and no laboured panegyrics, or accidental circumstances, will probably do more than give the Ton to fashion for a fhort time, nor any feverity of animadverfion create a prejudice that will be lafting; but, without either, it may be agreeable to fome readers to be told a few things relating to him, which are not to be found in his writings.
